Hi readers,
All my life, I've believed in 'It's their life, don't interfere'. I didn't hand out advice about anything - bringing up kids, someone's love-life, whatever. If, as a teacher, I was asked a specific question, I answered it, but my advising stopped there.
Then along came a good friend who has a problem with her sinus. She sneezes every morning and has droopy eyes for a while after she wakes up.
I've recently started taking acupuncture treatment for my thyroid (it really doesn't hurt, but I know you won't believe me when I say that) and I was sure acupuncture would help her with her sinus problem. I spoke to my acupuncture Doctor about her, and got an affirmation that the treatment does help with sinus.
I advised.
I didn't stop there. I persuaded. I coaxed. I nagged. I made an utter pest of myself.
Finally, I dragged her there, kicking and screaming. (Well, that's an exaggeration, but I'm a writer, a little licence is allowed in a description!) I had my treatment done with her in the room, to prove it doesn't hurt. Muttering under her breath (or was that my imagination?) she allowed the Doctor to give her the treatment.
Hey!
It's helping! She's had two sittings so far, and we're going for the third together in a couple of days. She says she sneezes less and feels better in the mornings. Some bits of the treatment did hurt her in the beginning, but it was much smoother and much less painful than she had imagined.
I gave someone advice and I feel good about it!
Did I ever interfere with her life, and am I ever happy I did!
So am I going to change now, and suddenly become agony aunt? I guess not. I'm going to stick to my earlier maxim - 'It's their life, don't interfere'. But. That's it. There's going to be a 'but' there now. Or an 'unless'.
The 'unless' reads - unless it's a really, really good friend who will benefit and won't take it amiss!
So I've changed a little bit since I last wrote to you, and I wanted to share the experience!
Thanks for listening,
Sonali |
