Holiday Gifting
It is the season when giving and getting presents is on everybody's mind. At the same time, many people are either not able to give as many presents as they would like to, or they go into debt for buying presents. Insane, I know.
Here on Writing.Com, we have neat presents we can send each other that are free or only cost a few pennies. Think reviews, a c-note, an image made for a Writing.Com friend. Send an unexpected Merit Badge with a heartfelt message, or award a piece in a friend's portfolio.
What about our friends from outside Writing.Com? How about writing them a poem or a short story. Use the wonderful contests run by members to get you started with a prompt or a challenge. Do you really think you child's teacher needs another soap set? How about a poem that highlights her skills in helping your kids become literate. How about an action adventure short story for the person bringing you the newspaper every day? (There has got to be a movie in there.)
Use your craft as a writer to create something unique and unforgettable for a friend. Ask your Writing.Com pals to help you with proofreading or coming up with ideas.
Happy end of the Julian year. Enjoy the festivals you celebrate.

Responses to my November newsletter "Read the Rules"
Murc wrote: Thanks for helping me get more people to come to my contest! "Invalid Item" .
It's a great idea. I really hope it takes off. I'd like to enter at some point, so I hope you stay with it and keep posting prompts.
Diane wrote: I love the title of this newsletter. I am always sad to disqualify an entry to the site contests, but the rules are there for a reason and to be fair, I must enforce them across the board. This is a great reminder to all members that they should check to be certain an entry fits within the rules before submitting!
I know. What a pity sometimes for the great stories that go disqualified.

We recently had to disqualify a few entries in Dragon's Keep because of word count issues and one of them would have easily taken 1st place. It really was difficult as the judges to disqualify a story that would otherwise have been a sure winner. We just couldn't do that to the people who did comply with the rules. "Invalid Item"
What a bummer for that great story! And thank you for your kind comment about my newsletter.
JACE wrote: Giselle, having been on both sides--DQ'd for failing to add a word count, and had to DQ a contest entry for being late--your thoughts are right on. I suspect publishers are just as picky; might as well learn here. And thanks for plugging the "Cove." "Paradise Cove Writing Challenge-On Hold"
And I bet your entry would have placed at the top hadn't it been for the missing word count. |
