About This Newsletter

Open a new window,
Open a new door,
Travel a new highway,
That's never been tried before;
Before you find you're a dull fellow,
Punching the same clock,
Walking the same tight rope
As everyone on the block.
The fellow you ought to be is three dimensional,
Soaking up life down to your toes,
Whenever they say you're slightly unconventional,
Just put your thumb up to your nose.
And show 'em how to dance to a new rhythm,
Whistle a new song,
Toast with a new vintage,
The fizz doesn't fizz too long.
There's only one way to make the bubbles stay,
Simply travel a new high way,
Dance to a new rhythm,
Open a new window ev'ry day!~~From Mame!

Letter from the editor

Forty years ago I had a nebulous dream of working for a publisher to learn the ways and hows such that I could one day be a publisher. Over the years the dream waxed and waned. Then I got a job as an editor. The real world slammed into me and my concept of same. I adjusted but the dream came back full blown. I learned about what is involved in the new world of self-publishing as opposed to the older concept of 'vanity press.' I learned that depending upon the 'self-publisher' there could be either a huge difference or, with some, none at all.

I decided there could be a 'middle of the road' self-publisher who did not necessarily accept anything and everything that came their way. It doesn't have to be about the money as much as being about good authors getting published. This could be the concept that could raise the overall conception of the self-publishing community. After months of research, thought, networking and scrambling, and with the 'go for it' pushes and shoves of good friends and family, I am launching Wynwidyn Press, LLC. (www.wynwidynpress.com) I figure I am pushing sixty years old; if I don't go after this dream now, I will run out of time.

All this coming together is making me realize that if I spread myself too thin, I will not do justice to the things that are important to me. Giving up WDC is not an option I will consider, but cutting down on my newsletters is a compromise that I can work with. So this will be my last Drama Newsletter. I will still be doing my For Authors one. Going after this dream is huge. I am putting so much on the line for this. But I am determined to make it a success. I am determined that a small press run by authors for authors can make a statement and be one that 'gets' the author's sensibilities about their books, and works with authors on all levels (from editing to marketing to ... to make sure their book is the best it is capable of being.

I will miss writing this newsletter. I will miss the interaction. Hopefully, I have sparked your muses, imparted some knowledge and given you insights into what can make your writing better! The other editors who write this newsletter are awesome! There'll be a new one starting soon. Please help them feel welcome! Thank you all for keeping me on my toes, for giving me ideas and making me stretch and grow! It has been an honor and a privilege! I leave saddened but excited: I will be helping new writers become published authors, and helping others achieve their dreams as I pursue mine.

Fyn

Ask & Answer

Joto-Kai Author IconMail Icon writes: We're drawn to these images of people breaking down for two purposes: we reassure ourselves that what we felt is normal, and we learn something about what is to be done-- or not to be done!

blunderbuss says: I think this is a useful check list for characterisation as well as plot/conflict situations. There's one thing that is one my mind a bit of late (and you did ask for suggestions on future newsletters) - nobody's perfect, but what makes a character likeable? Sometimes they do dreadful things, but we still feel sympathy for them. What engenders that - and I don't mean somebody suddenly reforming their ways! Anybody got any ideas?

StephBee Author IconMail Icon adds: Fyn, amazing how the time flies! Congrats on 2 years. I think I did 3 years with the Drama NL. Maybe you could do a series about dramists through the years starting with Shakespeare? I loved the look at "different" types of characters. Most of those types would really help to round out a supporting cast I think.

Mara ♣ McBain Author IconMail Icon comments: Interesting NL! I liked your definitions and it gives me something to think about so that my characters aren't always troupers. *Wink*

dejavu_BIG computerprobs Author IconMail Icon suggests:How about a discussion on what makes Drama different in genre from Action/Adventure or Thriller/Suspence as far as writing and marketing a Drama story goes? Do they generally overlap each other?

NOTE to the other Drama Newletter Editors--perhaps you will get some ideas from the above! New ideas are always a blessing.

Again, I thank you all for making this such a wonderful experience. ~~Fyn
