About This Newsletter

CONTEST & ACTIVITIES NEWSLETTER

Writing.com is a great place to practice your writing, receive reviews and support from fellow members. Being a part of Writing.com's community gives you the validation you need to be the best writer you can be.

I have been an editor for the Contest & Activities Newsletter for almost two years now, and I couldn't be happier. I am lucky to be among a super group of editors who put so much effort and pride into creating informational newsletters with a flair of personal quality.

The Contest & Activities Newsletter will showcase up-to-date contests and will also mention contests that have been around awhile. Contests are not only fun, but a great way to earn gift points, receive constructive reviews and meet fellow writers. If you would like to host a contest or you want to read up on what's going on, you couldn't be in a better place -- all the tips, ideas and encouragement are right here!

There are many activities on Writing.com, such as Campfires, Interactive stories, In & Outs, Madlibs, Survey Forms, User Polls, Word Searches and whatever you, the member, would like to create and share with the community. There is so much fun stuff to talk about, so make sure you stick around!

Letter from the editor

Hello members!

Oh, what to write about, what to write. The exciting news for this week is that many of us members will be attending "Writing.Com Convention 2005Open in new Window., me being one of them. I enjoy meeting a person to match their face to their words. I tell ya, at Convention 2004, my imagination didn't get a face right. I was nervous to meet everyone, even though I tend to be outgoing. I am shy when it comes to meeting people for the first time or having to speak in front of a group. But, I was immediately put at ease when Mr. SM was the first to welcome me.

The highlights was the campfire participation -- teams of about ten people at different tables would work together to add their part to a story, which got pretty silly at times -- just laughing together was fun!

We had a formal dinner and dance one evening, in which I completely forget to bring something appropriate to wear...it was a lovely dinner just the same.

My favorite activity was the auction in which everybody had to bring a creation or buy something to auction off for "Convention Sponsorship". I bought a beautiful framed-photograph of flowers created by Mrs. SM, a book that is actually a secret stash box by Wannabe (always comes in handy *Bigsmile*) and chocolate fudge by Catwoman...oh it was scrumptious!

There are many active members who have not attended the convention and I would highly recommend it. Meeting people puts the whole Writing.com anonymous personna in perspective, you are not guessing all the time. And, it is just a blast!

Have fun reading the following items that pertain to past conventions:

Ask & Answer

Well, Laurencia, I have entered two contests which brings my total entries since 1/2003, three. I have to admit, it made for a fun Sunday afternoon. (I didn't want to work anyway.)

Thanks Lucy!

Hi Laurencia,

For sure summertime -- especially for those of us in the northern climes -- is all about getting out of the house and letting the fresh air and sun work its magic.

But as you talked about driving and going to the beach and bicycling accompanied by the radio, CDs, and Ipods, I thought, "Oh no no no, too much noise!" I know that those things can be inspiring, but I think that they can also be distractions from simply experiencing the moment. After all, summertime excursions are rich with interaction between ourselves and the outside world. I was very pleased that you mentioned the meditative qualities of being outside, of gardening and listening to the birds sing, because I think writers need to be especially attuned to our senses and to our inner landscape. All the better to take in the rich variety of experience that summer can offer.

Wonderful advice! I certainly do agree with learning to admire the quietness of nature and listening to the words that appear.

well done!

Why, thank you!

Hello. This comment applies to all newsletters in general. I have found that some of the contest posted are closed. This gets frustrating when looking for new contest to enter. Is there some way the editors could check and make sure the contest they post links to are still open? Ex: A contest for a Contest closed 6/17 but the link appeared in this newsletter. I have had this problem with most of the newsletters advertising contest. Thanks for looking into this matter.

Hello!

I know, it can be frustrating when a potential contest you would like to enter closes. I always do my best to make sure that the end-dates of the contests that I post are after the edition of my newsletter. Unfortunately, there is no way to be certain that the contest will close before the posted end-date. If the host of the contest decides to end the contest prematurely, that is their right. And, I personally cannot control how the other editors create their newsletter.

Also, you can check out all community contests under "Item Jumps" which is located under "Site Navigation", scroll down to contests.

What a pleasant surprise to find my contest plugged here. Thanks!
