First, thanks to The Milkman for taking my editorial over last month. I apologize to those who were promised a feature from me, as I’ve not had access to Writing.Com in quite some time now, and cannot get to my account easily. When I get back online, I will certainly feature your items. I’m working hard on getting my computer working again at home – who knew computers could be so finicky? Worse than a woman, I say!
A friend made a music mix for me and I’ve been listening to it this past week. This friend of mine is fond of country music. I’ll admit, I’m not a huge fan of the stuff. In fact, I pretty much never listen to it unless I’m trapped in a car with someone who is, and forced to listen. But, this week listening to some of these songs, I found myself smiling and laughing at the things I heard. Comedy stuck into music.
”Well that's just like last year on my birthday
She lost all track of time and burnt the cake
And every smoke detector in the house was goin' off…”
Oh wow. That sounds, um, familiar! And the song goes on…
”When she's layin' on my shoulder on the sofa in the dark
And about the time she falls asleep so does my right arm
And I want so bad to move it 'cause it's tinglin' and it's numb…”
Both of these came from a Brad Paisley song called Little Moments Like These (written by Chris DuBois and Brad Paisley, copyright 2003 EMI April Music, Inc./Sea Gayale Music). What makes the lyrics so funny is that they come from real life situations.
This is what makes the television series, Sienfield so popular. It is normal, every day happenings and a mix of different or unusual characters. Real life is funnier (and stranger) than fiction. Mix in a little exaggeration as needed and, Walla! – you’ve got comedy.
Brad Paisley must have a love of humorous songs, because he’s got another one called, “I’m Gonna Miss Her” (written by Brad Paisley and Frank Rogers, copyright 2001 EMI April Music/Sea Gayle Music)
”Today she met me at the door
Said I would have to choose
If I hit that fishin' hole today
She'd be packin' all her things
And she'd be gone by noon
Well I'm gonna miss her
When I get home…
Yeah, I'm gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite.”
Hopefully this one was not based of real life events, but it takes a serious situation (not spending time with your significant other) and makes light of it. The element of surprise is a great way to add humor to your writings. You would not expect him to choose fishing over his wife, so the fact he is so non-chalant about it, is hilarious.
The element of surprise will usually get me to laughing quicker than anything, and is usually randomly said. “Our founding fathers, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and Zoo - Salted and Roasted ….” Exactly.
When you are going about your everyday, take a few moments to notice the people around you. Twist normal scenarios a little and watch them become humorous. Notice the deep wrinkle your boss gets on his brow when he’s about to blow his top. Notice how when the teenager trips over her own purse in the mall, how quickly she gets up to see if anyone saw. Take the little things and stretch them into something funny.
Until next time (and hopefully by then, internet access)…
