Choosing a Contest

I love entering contests, but sometimes choosing a contest to enter can be difficult. How do you choose which contests you enter on Writing.Com? There are so many to choose from at any given time! Genre selections vary from the action/adventure to the young adult. After selecting a genre, there is still the form to consider, either poetry or prose.

Every contest has it's merits. Depending on what you are looking for, you should be able to find a contest to suit your needs on the site. Sometimes I'm looking for a contest that will challenge me to take my writing in a new direction. In these times, I choose an unfamiliar genre or attempt a new poetic form. More than likely, I won't win the contest, but it's the experience I'm after rather than the prize.

Other times I am simply looking to win some gift points. At these times I look for contests that have a prompt in a genre with which I'm comfortable. I also look to see how many people have entered the contest. Large prizes attract a larger number or entrants, hence more competition. Smaller prizes are often easier to win as not as many members enter those contests.

Your goals will determine the contests you enter. If you are looking for a simple writing exercise, perhaps any contest will do. Consider your goals carefully before entering a contest. Review the rules and check out the competition if you're looking for a prize. Make sure you edit your entry carefully so you aren't disqualified on a technicality. Even if you don't think you have a shot at the prizes, you should give it your best effort. *Smile*
