Letter from the editor

Greetings from the heat of the heart*Heart*

What is the paranormal romance? Is it all about vamps and were-creatures? Or is it more of a classic romance with a twist of speculativer fiction in the form of what is scientifically unexplainable? Webster's Dictionarydefines paranormal as "not scientifically explainable," and when we add romance, it takes the story or verse even deeper out of the pale.

Touching on themes ranging from fantasy, science fiction and horror, with its roots firmly in a gothic past, paranormal romance is now more main stream with characters ranging from human to vampires, ghosts, lycans (shape shifters) witches, demons and more.

One of the most common traits of paranormal romance is the blending of the "real" world with that of a supernatural or fantastical. The growing romance is generally but not always between a human and an "other" (vampire, werewolf, etc.) We also see time travel adventures with a romantic plot, human psychics, ghosts, and even aliens.

Paranormal romance has grown in breadth by embracing this variety of encounters. Original ideas woven into a believable mythology with strong characters and realistic conflicts to overcome make this a fun writing experience that readers can engage along with our characters.

A romance of para-normal proportions creates opportunities for novel ideas and voices. Consider Ann Rice, who was a pioneer in relating a story from the vampire's point of view and his take on the world and what was happening around him. And that's just one 'point of view' *Wink* Or see Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series which re-write commonly accepted perceptions about vampires. Also, consider the Twilight series; now how unique is that*Thumbsup*

No matter what your paranormal story is about take the time to write the mythology of your vampires, werewolves or whatever else has taken your fancy. Even if you don't show (or tell) it all, the para-normal being must know (or be learning) him/herself. Consider the following questions to ask of your para-normal characters:

*Bullet*Where did they come from?
*Bullet*indent}What powers do they have?
*Bullet*What are their weakness?
*Bullet*How many of them exist in our world? In another if they are aliens?
*Bullet*What sort of society do they have?
*Bullet*How do they hide from normal humans/mortals?
*Bullet*What laws or code of behavior do they have?
*Bullet*How do they survive?
*Bullet*Do they have any natural enemies?

Some of the answers to the above questions may come from humankind's history, mythology, scienctific exploration or fantasy. As we explore our characters' lives, we will be able to add layers to our super-naturals that may even surprise us. Give them a bit of rein, and the romance will grow in depth, be believable as well as intense.

Give them a chance to share their stories and entwine their lives with mortals, and the romantic encounters will sizzle and engage readers as much as the characters *Heart*
