World Building
Working on a new book or even short story takes some world building. Just as you want to know as much as possible about the characters in your stories, you should also have a solid grasp of the world they operate in.
The Real World
There is the real world in which we all live in. There is nothing magical about it. Action adventure can happen in a sky scraper, in the desert, or on a train. All those places that we could frequent on a day to day basis have the potential to be the backdrop for amazing adventures.
The Past
Historic fiction, whether telling the story of a war or the story of the peaceful exploration of an uninhabited area, the simple fact that it happened before the invention of electricity, the railroads, or even flushing toilets makes it more adventurous.
The Future
The possibilities are endless. Just think of Jules Verne who wrote about all those wondrous things such as a submarine at a time when it was inconceivable for it to exist. Now, submarines are in every ocean. When your world is in the future, you can do just about anything you want with it. You can make it hyper technological, or apocalyptic (where it eerily resembles The Past).
A Fantasy World
Now all bets are off. Not only can you decide what and how much technology you want to put in it. You can put magic, shape shifters, gods, robots, or talking animals into your story. The Fantasy World is detached from time and space restrictions. You are the master of the universe! Doesn't that sound neat?
Your World
As you embark on the journey to write an action adventure story or book, take some time upfront to build your world. Come up with rules. Imagine the people, the places, how they live, what they eat, how they get their food, and many more details of your world. During world building, no detail is too trivial. Write down as many details as you can dream up. Each of those will help you to make your story richer.
