Pick a Winner!

This newsletter is about a little gem of a tool we have at WDC called the virtual dice. While the actual roll happens somewhere in the WDC code, the results are quickly computed for you. It's a handy tool for raffles or giveaways. I'll use my Christmas raffle as an example. When members purchase tickets for "Leger's Christmas Raffle - CLOSEDOpen in new Window., I add their name to a numbered list. Each ticket has an individual number listed here in the raffle bank "Christmas Raffle Ticket List + BankOpen in new Window..

When the deadline rolls around I go to the dice. Left of page navigation > Writing.Com Tools > Virtual Dice. You can identify what the dice roll is choosing and then generate a new dice roll with a certain set of parameters. There's more about how to choose the number of dice, sides and rolls here: "Virtual DiceOpen in new Window.

To view a dice roll from an activity, go to the Virtual Dice page and put the item ID number of the activity page you're interested in. In the case of my raffle it would be 1828348. Then click View and all rolls associated with the raffle will show. This shows the number of rolls, the side chosen and if you consult the bank page where all the tickets are, the winner chosen. For members running raffles and giveaways, it's a good way to show the rolls so there is no question about how the winners were chosen.

So instead of tearing up little bits of paper and pulling one out of a hat, try using this awesome little tool.

Last month's question: What's your favorite activity?

Elle - on hiatus Author Icon replied: My new contest is perfect for newbies who would like to try their hands at a review - everyone is welcome at "The Kiwi Review Challenge! - closedOpen in new Window.!
Personally, I like activities that go over a period of time, so you get to meet and know people. Like the NaNoWriMo prep, "CLASH! Open in new Window. (which I'm helping judge) and "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window. (which I'm also helping judge!). I try to host contests that are easy to enter but encourage writing (of a item or a review).
