About This Newsletter

Writing.com is a great place to practice your writing, receive reviews and support from fellow members. Being a part of Writing.com's community gives you the validation you need to be the best writer you can be.

I have been an editor for the Contest & Activities Newsletter for almost two years now, and I couldn't be happier. I am lucky to be among a super group of editors who put so much effort and pride into creating informational newsletters with a flair of personal quality.

The Contest & Activities Newsletter will showcase up-to-date contests and will also mention contests that have been around awhile. Contests are not only fun, but a great way to earn gift points, receive constructive reviews and meet fellow writers. If you would like to host a contest or you want to read up on what's going on, you couldn't be in a better place -- all the tips, ideas and encouragement are right here!

There are many activities on Writing.com, such as Campfires, Interactive stories, In & Outs, Madlibs, Survey Forms, User Polls, Word Searches and whatever you, the member, would like to create and share with the community. There is so much fun stuff to talk about, so make sure you stick around!

Letter from the editor

Hello!

It's good to be back for another edition! *smile* I returned home Sunday from a ten-day family vacation. We house-swapped with a family who lives in San Fransico, CA; they stayed in our house in Maine and we stayed in their house...you save so much money.

Okay, so, we arrive in San Fran, left sunny Maine behind, and where were staying is totally fogged in; I guess the fog stays for a couple months out of the year, because of the way the winds blow off the ocean into the city...go figure. Well, one good thing was that we could drive out of the cloud into sunshine about five miles from the house. I didn't like waking up to gray days every morning though, I got enough of that during spring.

We did all the touristy things...site seeing and taking photos. Lets see, we went to the San Fransico Zoo, which was a good zoo, but was located in the fog, so it was freezing. We took a ferry to Alcatraz, that was cool! We went on rides in Santa Cruz. My mother-in-law took care of the kids, while my hubby and I drove to Napa and did some wine tasting at three different wineries, that was very fun! We drove down Lombard Street, which is the crookedest street in the world...very cool, but got dizzy, lol. We spent five hours at Montery Bay Aquarium...I recommend it to everyone, it's awesome. We also hiked through the Muir Woods, which is the oldest redwood family in the world...absolutely memorizing!

Well, that was most of the stuff we did, I don't want to bore you with the rest. It was a wonderful vacation, but I'm glad to be back home in my own bed and doing my own thing. I will say though, a vacation is a great way to clear your head. I thought of many things to write about and certain ideas to research for an existing story I am writing.

The moral to my article is, go on vacation if your mind is in a rut. Even if it's only for a day or two, get away. There are some people who say, "Sit in a chair and look at a blank piece of paper until ideas flow, and maybe that works, but not always. I believe people need rest, rejuvenate the soul, let thoughts marinate in the mind...give it a try, it works.

Until next time...

When and where is the convention for 2005?
Rixfarmgirl Author Icon

There have been four conventions; the last location and I believe it will be the same next year is Bethlehem, PA, about an hour south of NY. The convention takes place at the Holiday Inn, which is close to the airport. And, it was the third weekend, July 21-24.

The following link is my story of the convention, you will also find a link at the bottom of the page of the Convention itinerary. SMs are planning 2006 now, so keep an eye open; the event will be posted on the site, so you will have an option to sign up.
