The Six "W" Questions ...

... or how to create SMART goals.

Some of you may remember my recent "S. M. A. R. T.Open in new Window. newsletter. Today, I want to go into more detail how you can use the "S" in S.M.A.R.T. goals in relation to writing.

S Specific. Set up a specific writing goal with the help of the "W" questions.

Who *Right* is involved? Are you writing alone or in collaboration with somebody else?

What *Right* do you want to accomplish? Is it a short story, poem, novel, technical writing, other?

Where *Right* will you write? If in any way possible, create a space that is most conducive to your writing.

When *Right* and how long will you write? What is your deadline? At which time of the day/week do you want to write?

Which *Right* constraints do you have? Rules? Requirements?

Why *Right* do you want to write this piece? What is the purpose of your writing? Are you entertaining yourself? others? want to win a contest?

In a nutshell, you have to go from "I wish I could win more contests" (general) to "I will enter at least one contest a week until I won ten times." (specific)

Ask & Answer

In response to my last newsletter "Keep ActiveOpen in new Window. I got the following replies:

👼intuey Author Icon wrote: Loved your pep talk! It's exactly what I needed to hear. Onto the contests *Bigsmile*

Wow! Nice! You make me want to follow my own advice. *Shock* But really, how will I ever get back to writing if I don't write?

Marie Author Icon wrote: so I have received an email from DHL about something being shipped to me. just wanting to make sure this isn't spam

I am not sure why you sent this as a reply to my newsletter, but I can tell you that you should delete all emails from DHL, USPS, Federal Express, and UPS that tell you to click on a link for a missplaced package. Those are viruses. Don't fall for that.

BIG BAD WOLF is Howling Author Icon wrote: My contest has an important gift to all who enter- the nightmare i gone. "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window.

The nightmare you gone? *Confused*

A*Monaing*Faith Author Icon wrote: Hoping to get this in for next weeks (5/8) CnA NL since it ends on the 15th, please and thank you!!! "Save My Upgrade! Raffle - OPEN August 1Open in new Window.

See above, it's in the lineup. *Smile*

KRHolbrook Author Icon wrote: I'm not one that thinks "keep writing" is something to be said. If you keep making yourself write day-by-day, you're going to burn yourself out. It's happened to me. I tried making myself write each day and stopped writing for almost two years.
I believe that you should write when the urge comes, and don't try to force it when it isn't there.

You are correct. Just as you should never ever try and push through writer's block, you should never work out if you are having a bad day, withhold chocolate after midnight, go outside when the weather isn't a perfect sunny day at 70 F, or do anything that causes you to wrinkle your forehead with concentration. Go the path of the least resistance at all times.

Mark Allen Mc Lemore Author Icon wrote: This is true with everything. I think I have two hobbies I am always improving. One is gardeneering, yes, I spelled that right, gardeneering, this consumes half my spring, my whole summer and the best part of my favorite season- fall. Then comes the writing, I fill in the chilly part of my favorite season, all of my winter and half of my spring improving this hobby.
Great newsletter.

I wish I could gardeneer. In the meantime, gardeneering and writing probably have their better days and lower days. As long as you don't give up and keep at it, the plants will grow and the words will flow.

Devil's Delight-Cherry Author Icon wrote: I just wanted to say thank you for a lovely Newsletter. *Smile* The message you gave us was so brilliant - and so true! I love it! Still sitting here grinning at how you absolutely hit the nail on the head.
Damn, I should never have stopped writing! *Laugh*
Thanks again.
Regards
Cherry-Anne

I feel the same way. I keep writing newsletters and other things, but I really need to force myself to edit my novels, enter contests, and all around let the creative spices flow again.
