The Eiffel Tower was erected as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair which was held in Paris. While Gustave Eiffel was not the main architect, it was his company that designed and built the tower.

Gustave Eiffel was born Gustave Bonickhauser? He didn't change his name until 1880.
When the tower was completed, it was the tallest man-made structure in the world and held the title for over 40 years.

The Eiffel Tower was meant to be a suitable memorial to commerate the centennial of the French Revolution.
At first, Gustave didn't have much interest in the project, but once his engineers added the arches and a glass pavilion, he grew to like the design.
Construction started on the tower in January 1887. The original permit allowed the tower to stand for 20 years. In 1909, ownership would revert to the city of Paris and it would be torn down.
So why wasn't it torn down?
It proved invaluable as a communications tower. In World War I, the tower was fitted with radio transmitters effectively jamming German communications.

The Eiffel Tower is 124 years old.
Gustave Eiffel went on to construct buildings, monuments, railway bridges, and train stations all over the world. The Statue of Liberty was originally assembled at his construction company in Paris.
For me, it was interesting to discover the Tower only had a 20 year permit. I visited Paris in 1987 and 1991 and each time the beauty of the structure took my breath away. The Eiffel Tower has come to represent the heart, soul, and determination of the French people. The views from the tower are awe-inspiring. I suppose that's what makes a romantic place to propose. It's been a romantic getaway for many couples over the years.
Challenge: Write a 200 word vignette that takes place at the Eiffel Tower. It could be a first kiss, a flower exchange, a proposal. I'll highlight the stories in an upcoming newsletter.
