Gearing Up For NaNoWriMo
September is the Month to Find NaNoWriMo Preparation Activities.
NaNoWriMo, or NationalNovelWritingMonth is in November, so it seems like you have all the time in the world before you have to think about it or commit to it. The truth is: No, you need to start getting your writing life in order right now.
First Step:
Take part in any and all writing contests and activities during Writing.Com's birthday bash during the first week of September. There are usually several contests that will ask that you write every day during that week. It's a good way to get into the swing of things for a whole month of daily writing.
Second Step:
Check out all NaNoWriMo groups, forums, activities, and contests right here on Writing.Com that will be available to you during October. Signing up starts in September since the prep-activities will happen during October. Read all group and forum pages carefully. What do you have to do? How much time will you have to dedicate to those preparations? Do you know anybody who took these activities before? Ask them how they liked it and if it helped them with their NaNoing.
Third Step:
After careful consideration of all your options, decide whether you want to take part in any of the NaNoWriMo preparation activities. Make sure you only sign up to those that you feel very strong about. There are a lot to choose - so many in fact that you might end up with activity overload instead of working on your writing! (Exclamation mark put here on purpose.)
You will have more benefit from choosing one NaNoWriMo preparation activity and doing it with gusto than even trying for two and wearing yourself out on the second day. If there are two that you really really like, flip a coin. Seriously. One activity is all you need. Do it right. Do it well. You will reap the benefits during November.

In response to my last newsletter "Next Up: August!" I got the following replies:

You're very welcome.
Marci Missing Everyone wrote: It seems that most of our fundraisers are geared toward groups, but there are a lot of contests on WDC that rely on donations to keep going. Here is a raffle that supports poetry contests. It will run monthly through October. "Invalid Item"
I hope it's very successful. You are so right that contests need some help with gift points too.

It was a great idea on your part. I hope now that you're already several weeks into it, you're all having some good success at writing up your novels.
