It will be found, in fact, that the ingenious are always fanciful, and the truly imaginative never otherwise than analytic.

I borrowed the title for this newsletter from the writer who made things happen! Her story won first prize at the "Journey Through Genres: Official Contest" and to take a closer look, her and some of the other entries are posted below. What she wrote today in her blog made me think. Taking a risk to write a horror story proved to be worth her while. That's not always the case. Not everyone is capable of writing what they love to read about and once again, I'll use myself as an example.
There's no way I'd ever write a horror story!
Don't be so shocked and don't question me on this. There's a method to my madness. As I wrote before, I truly love this genre and can't get enough of it sometimes. Feeling the dread of knowing that something bad and scary will happen is what pulls me into the story itself, holds on to me and doesn't let go until the end. When the writer's words make me turn on all the lights in the house and when my blood turns to ice, I wish I could tell that person what a great job they did.
As a judge for the official contest, I had the pleasure of reading many great yet horrifying entries in the past two weeks. There were different views about things, different perspectives, all sorts of twists and turns, many of them scaring me to the point where I had to stop reading and turn to something funny in order to erase it from my mind. Perhaps I scare easily.
Since I'm doing Nano - and my story is most definitely not scary - I finally learned what it means to fall in love with your own characters. Their lives becomes yours. That is also the reason why I wouldn't be a good candidate for writing anything scary. I'd freak myself out with it! You, on the other hand, are allowed to do that to me. In fact, I welcome it.
Nevertheless, some of us lack the belief that we can accomplish something we never tried before. Disregard that horrible feeling and try it anyway. Don't set yourself up for failure. Think positive yet gruesome. Give yourself a nudge in that direction and don't expect anyone to help you. Believe that you can do it all on your own and let your fingers glide across that keyboard until you have something coherent, then take a closer look and judge it for yourself.
It may not be the best work you've ever done, but you've tried. The thing is, your first try may not be your best. Heck, it might take a lot of tries before you get where you really want to be. Don't forget that the subject you're writing about may not be your best choice. Switch things up and trying something new in the same genre until you find your niche may be your solution.
Dare yourself to at least try. Don't count on it to be perfect right away, but if you've managed to scare yourself with your own story, you may be onto something good. Go with it!
Take that next step and take a risk! No risk, no fun, and most certainly, no reward. Take it from GG if not from me.
