The REAL Way to Conquer Writer's Block
Everyone uses a lot of tricks to get rid of writer's block, and even me. But when it boils down, there is one cause.
I may have found the source of my writer's block, and in addition, to the writer's block of others. I might not have, of course, but I might! So, in that possibility, I thought I might share.
I have struggled writing for years. Too many years to be comfortable with, honestly. For several years, I have been able to get the newsletters written, but little else. Stories, poems... all of that comes in short spurts, and then vanishes. I am inspired, and then it is gone again. I have noticed a pattern.
Because I have a sleep disorder, sleep comes easily to me, but is rarely restful and satisfying. I don't wake up rested.
When I have the rare opportunity to get a week or more of actual good rest, so my body finally starts to feel rested, suddenly my inspiration and love of writing comes flooding back to me in a tidal wave. And if I think about it, this makes sense. A rested body means a rested mind. A rested body can accomplish more, so a rested mind should also accomplish more.
Some do their best writing at the last minute, racing toward a deadline. Adrenaline takes control, and gives their body and brain energy. This is one form of energy talked about usually in sports, but it is equally valid for anything that someone holds passion for.
Others, I think perhaps I am in this category, do their best writing when their body is rested and healthy. As my health has deteriorated slowly, my energy has deteriorated slowly, and my "writer's block" has increased.
Rest is something that society is trying to tell us that we can live without. Heck, we tell ourselves that we will do just fine with four hours of sleep. But really, we don't. Proper rest is required for our bodies to function properly. Who knows if it really is that "eight hours a night" that people throw around - for some, it may be that more is needed, depending on the body's needs.
So, I am going to venture to say that the REAL cure for writer's block... is rest and good health. While good health may be out of reach for some of us (goodness knows, sometimes I feel it is for me), rest is something most of us can achieve. It may mean going to bed at an earlier time, it may mean scheduling in some naps, and it may mean cutting down on some of the things we are involved in. But I think the reward might be bigger than the sacrifice. The reward might actually take a while, but... I think it will pay off in the end.
I also think this is something we all know, somewhere down deep. But we are often unwilling to set our other things aside to make sure we get ourselves to bed.
I'm going to try it! At least, in some form. If you do, too, good luck!

And here are my other picks for the week. I hope you all had a blast with NaNoWriMo, and stayed safe on Black Friday (Cyber Monday is so much less hassle, anyway. ) Remember to leave them some feedback.
