An Elf (written) Romance/Love Newsletter
The characters are having a moment, the reader knows what might be coming and really wants it to happen but then something interrupts. Moment denied. This newsletter discusses the use of the almost moment in writing romance. |

There are many different aspects to romance, approaches to take and experiences to put on the page for the reader's enjoyment. It's often about the questions, the conflict and the result at the end. While a fair amount of romance stories follow some aspects of formatting and content expected by readers who love the genre, there are at times, stories where there is that hope of getting something but the result (for that scene) doesn't quite give them what they want. I am calling it the "almost moment."
This topic is inspired by a particular blogfest that happens every year online. It's called the "No Kiss Blogfest" and while it says no, what really ends up getting posted is a lot of stories/snippets/etc where the reader should want the kiss to happen, they are in the moment and what the characters to get that loving gesture. However, it doesn't happen. There is a minor let down but at the same time an enjoyment. They can feel for the character who wanted it to happen too, or maybe find understanding in the character who had no idea what was going to happen in the first place. It's a fun blogfest to enter.
The almost kiss is probably one of the better options for the "almost moment" when it comes to romance stories, but it's not the only one. There are many other moments the characters can experience in a story where they think something is going to happen or someone is going to say something to them but then it doesn't. The "almost I love you" is another good example. And there are a few ways the moment can be interrupted.
There is the interruption. This involves other people often times, though an animal of some type could interrupt a moment as well. The characters are in the moment, about to do or say something. The main character knows it (in first or third person, doesn't matter). The reader knows it. Then someone comes in at the wrong time and messes everything up. Almost but not quite getting them there and they back away.
Another options is the mishap. In one of the scenes I read this year, a table breaking stepped the two characters from kissing. Many different things could happen right before the moment is experienced to make it an almost. Stuff falls over, things break, loud noises affect the mood and many other possible things come up at the exact moment needed to end whatever the characters were about to say or do. It's a fun option at times.
Many different characters can have almost moments too. One of the scenes I wrote one year for the no kiss was actually a scene between a gay boy and a girl (who was the daughter of his boss). He wasn't into her like that but the scene had the moment and readers even commented about how they wanted it to happen before the interruption occurred. I've also done the unsuspecting main character has an almost moment because even with boy main characters, it can be fun to have almost romantic moments.
So, think about your characters and think about a moment they could get close to having... Then make sure they don't right at the last moment. Have fun and keep writing romance.

What is your favorite "almost moment" in romance and why?
I don't have feedback to post here this time since I only received a few comments from my last newsletter, which was all about the girls. So, just thanks to everyone who reads my newsletters and hope you all like them. Though also, write more romance. It's always nice to see a few more romance stories to pick from for the feature section of these. Next time, I may just talk about the boys. We'll see.
