How to Make Yourself Stand Out
As a newsletter editor, one of my biggest challenges is finding Editors Picks to feature at the end of my newsletters. There are currently 46,566 items filed under the "romance/love" genre, and 26,776 under "relationship." I often chose items from both genres for this newsletter. As you can imagine, it would be impossible for me to read pages upon pages of poems and short stories before choosing which ones to share with you.
In my opinion, choosing items for the Romance/Love Newsletter is more difficult than some other newsletters. Even when I have some sort of theme in mind (first love, marriage, etc.), many stories and poems sound so much alike just from their titles and short descriptions. How do I even decide which ones to open and read? How do I prevent myself from falling into a trap of reading ten poems that use the same cliche to describe love?
A couple of weeks ago, StephBee talked about romance book covers. (See "Romance/Love Newsletter (April 30, 2014)" ) Imagine if you couldn't see the covers of the romance novels at the library or bookstore. Your next course of action would probably be to read the blurb on the back cover or inside of the book, right? Well, here at WDC the "short description" on each item works a lot like that blurb. It's often the reason why I'll open and read an item too.
So, what should you write in that "short description" section? I've thought of a few things that always make me look:
Offer a unique quote from your short story or poem. If I'm intrigued by one line, I'm more likely to read the rest.
DON'T just say "a poem about love" or "a story about a girl and a boy." That doesn't tell me why I should read your work when there are 500 other "poems about love" to chose from.
This might sound silly, but even a unique cover photo will catch my eye. I don't read items solely based on their cover photos, but it's always nice to see a creative one in a batch of the same stock images of hearts and teddy bears.
Following these tips could help you get noticed by reviewers, out of a sea of others!
