Everybody fears something, but a phobia goes beyond normal fear. Phobias are extreme, often irrational fears. Phobias may involve almost anything, including animals, plants, people, food, and situations.
Some phobias involve a real element of danger, such as airplane flights. Other people may fear something that seems relatively innocuous, such as trees or flowers. In this case, the phobia may result from a bad experience, such as falling out of a tree as a child.
In some cases, parents may transfer their phobias to their children. For example, a mother who fears the water may not allow her children to learn to swim or even go near the water. Those children will grow up with the same fear, which may be worse since they don't know how to swim.
People who suffer from phobias may go to great lengths to avoid the object of their fears. A person who fears dogs, for example, may never go outside. If they fear a living creature such as snakes or spiders, they may ascribe unrealistic abilities to those animals, such as the ability to open doors.
Phobias are a great source of inspiration for horror stories. What if the object of a phobia was really as horrible as those who fear it believe it to be? Maybe your main character has to face his worst fear to get away from a monster or save someone else. Or imagine a villain who kidnaps his victims and subjects them to their worst phobias.
Something to try: Write a horror story in which a character suffers from phobias.
