Just Kidding Around
This past weekend, the city where I live officially kicked off the holiday season with the lighting of the Christmas tree and holiday lights downtown. I hate winter weather, but I love the fuzzy feeling I get from the Christmas lights and light snowflakes in the air. My boyfriend and I decided to skip the overly-crowded Light Up Night on Friday and head downtown on Saturday afternoon instead. I was hoping for a nice, romantic walk through the Christmas village. What I got instead was a fun adventure where we embraced our inner children and had a blast just being together.
After grabbing tea at Starbucks, we went outside to the ice skating rink. Neither one of us wanted to skate, because we're both kind of klutzes and didn't want to end up in the Emergency Room together. However, we were there just in time to see the Mascot Skate, where mascots from local businesses walked or skated around the ice with the children and families that were present. The boyfriend got a lot of high fives from the mascots and even took a selfie with a giant raccoon. He was like a kid in a candy store and I loved seeing him so happy.
We checked out the Wintergarden and the Christmas Market next, where we saw lots of crafts and food from around the world. We even hit up the three story toy store while we were downtown! The saleslady on the doll floor asked me if the boyfriend was making his Christmas wish list. I said "Yes, and we were here last year for the same reason."
I love romance, a good bottle of wine, and a fire. But I also thought that our little downtown adventure really helped bring us together on a different level. One of the best things about being in love is the having the ability to be vulnerable with someone, to show them all of your facets. That's exactly what we did that day. Every day I spend making memories with that man makes me a little happier and my days a little "merrier and bright."
This holiday season, don't be afraid to embrace your inner child and have some fun with the ones you love. You may find that you're gaining something more than you thought you'd find.

You had a lot to say about my last newsletter about mixed-race couples. Thank you! Your thoughts are below.
I can't claim to know much about romance, in life or in writing. I can tell you, though, that if you give them a compelling normal goal, the characters will tend to force you to treat their specs with respect. That's what I've done, at least: my bi-lesbian character is more concerned with her position in society, her family heritage, and later with preserving that society, (different stories) than with 'lesbian issues.' I think presenting the issue as subtext is what will work. And, I think that's what you've said, far better than I did.
This is just my way of saying, "Hear, hear!" -Joto-Kai
Good article and topic. Your views echo so many others about writing romance that involves atypical couples (even handicapped is another one I haven't seen mentioned)..Anyway, your article reminded me of the Twitter reply I read the other day from Shonda Rhimes (Writer/Producer "How to Get Away with Murder", "Scandal" & Grey's Anatomy") when she replied to a tweet that said "the gay scenes in scandal and how to get away with murder are too much. There is no point and they add nothing to the plot" and she replied "There are no GAY scenes. There are scenes with people in them." then further commented "If u use the phrase "gay scenes", u are not only LATE to the party but also NOT INVITED to the party. Bye Felicia. #oneLOVE" Yeah, she said Bye Felicia. Loved it. Keep up the great work. -Tornado Dodger
Mix-race relationships? Gene Roddenberry got you beat in the 60's - Star Trek's Spock - Half-Human, Half-Vulcan! And this was during the 60's, when mixed-race relationships were more taboo than today - Think about it for a moment! And don't get me started on all of them other Mixed-Raced Characters, or even the possible combinations, like Vulcan-Klingon hybrids - that would be scary, in and of itself! You'd have an intelligent, logical, warrior-type of person there. -BIG BAD WOLF is Howling
What about re-writing a classic love story with an interracial or gay or lesbian couple? Romeo and Juliet comes to mind immediately as does Cinderella or Sleeping Beauty. That would be interesting. -Shanachie
The Black Dagger Brotherhood novels by J.R Ward includes a romance story between two men which is actually my favorite novel out of the whole series. She has also written about an interracial romance that has been building up for some time now,and they finally get their own personal novel next year. Yay! It seems to me that J.R Ward held nothing back and just went with it. Without her describing specific appearances the audience knew two of the characters (brothers) were African American males simply by their dialogue and how they interacted with one another and other characters. Both stories have been done very tastefully. -LA Ashley
Being mixed and in an inter-racial relationship myself this is my plan for my Nano novel-- an inter-racial couple, and my hero is the woman! The world needs more exposure to something that is becoming the "norm". People are afraid to meander away from the standard idea of a couple because they're afraid of losing loyal readers, but forget they'll gain other readers who won't be so quick to judge a book by its cover!
Love is color blind, I think more characters need to be color blind as well! -🌑 Darleen - QoD
more...... I hope you will consider encouraging romance stories about couples who meet and are dealing with various disabilities......their romance is certainly the least written about yet their hearts and romance is normal and real in all ways except for making accomodations to any on dozens of disabilities..........physical, mental, medical, and more. -ANN Counselor, Lesbian & Happy
