Letter from the editor

Here Comes Santa Claus, Here Comes Santa Claus

Ho Ho Ho!

Oh what? It's not Christmas? Well...gosh, you're right! But remember last year, when you had all kinds of activities you wanted to do and contests you wanted to enter, but you were so bogged down in your own contest you didn't have time? Every year it happens to me. I'm the world's WORST gift wrapper. I'm pretty sure a three year old can do better, and yet I insist on wrapping gifts which then eats an entire afternoon for a couple hundred feet of tape, sixty yards of paper and three wrapped gifts. Then I have to log on and check on the two holiday activities I do. After that, I log off and eggnog my way around the neighborhood. Pretty soon the gifts are opened, paper recycled and I'm all nogged out.

So this is your reminder, friends, to clean up your holiday contest pages, tweak the rules to help members understand better, and watch for gift point sales for GP prizes. This is also the time to talk to a friend and see if they would be interested in helping you with your holiday contest or activity, so you have some free time for family and friends. Perhaps they could check the forum for questions every other day, or judge the beginning round, it's so much easier when you know someone has your back if you get stuck at the company holiday party and you can't change a prompt on time.

It's also a good time to help another member host a contest, to mentor them and supervise their first go at hosting something. I'm sure many people would be more inclined to try their hand at hosting an activity if they have a mentor guiding their way. Or perhaps a newbie needs help with their first contest entry, you can give them guidance on choosing a story line for the prompt, or double checking their grammar for them. And help them learn the b-item link!

So before the holiday sneaks up on us like a silent ninja, take a few minutes and make a list of things that need to be refreshed in your portfolio, and make some new friends!

Ask & Answer

This month's question: What did you wish you had time to do last holiday season?

Last month's question: How has reviewing helped your editing?

Callie hears Angels these days Author Icon replied: Reviewing has not only helped my editing, it has made me very aware of my approach to a story when I'm just beginning the work. I remind myself to keep things active and not tell my reader what they're seeing. It's too easy to say, "I'll fix that spelling error or comma fault later. I always forget at least one item and am realizing now I really work hard to keep the annoyance factor down right from the get go. Great Question!

Thanks for the feedback! Leger~
