Love is Not One-Size Fits All
A friend of mine just got engaged. This is becoming a rather common occurrence, since I am in my 30's now. I've seen friends of every gender and sexual orientation find love. I've seen friends get married in churches and barns. My cousin got married in Greece with her parents and grandparents watching on Skype! I've seen friends get married at 18 years old, 21, 30, and even get divorced and remarried before they hit 31. At my high school reunion, I found out that an old friend is now in a polyamorous relationship-- legally married to one woman, but in a relationship with another, with his wife's consent.
My point is, love is NOT "one-size fits all." Every relationship is a little different. There are probably an infinite number of possibilities for a couple. Even whether or not a couple gets married (or wants to get married) can be a distinguishing factor that sets them apart from their friends. When we write about relationships, we tend to write about the kinds we know firsthand. If your boyfriend is a gamer, your romantic hero is a gamer. If you are heterosexual, your characters tend to be heterosexual. If you think sappy romance novels and rom-coms are awesome, chances are you are (at least initially) going to plan on writing romantic stories in the same fashion.
I've always been a fan of doing things that make us uncomfortable, and that includes in our writing. I urge you to remember that not all relationships are the same and that not all love is traditional, but that doesn't make it any less real or valid. Just like you might pick up a t-shirt of a certain color and size and it fits you perfectly, but someone else might pick it up and hate it, not all readers are going to enjoy the same romantic elements. Be more diverse when you can! Step outside your comfort zone. You may just expand your audience in the process. |
