Taking advantage of a bio spot can draw people to your writing. But sometimes it's hard to write about ourselves.
Quote of the Day:
"I used to make up stuff in my bio all the time, that I used to be a professional ice-skater and stuff like that. I found it so inspirational. Why not make myself cooler than I am?"

The Challenges of Writing a Bio
When it comes to writing a bio, would you rather be in a dentist’s chair, mouth frozen, and waiting for the drill to start up? It seems everywhere you go on social media they want to know a little about YOU! Yes, even here at WdC there's a place under the Biography Tab with a section titled About Me. The big question is, why is it so hard to write about ourselves, and how much are you going to reveal about your life? For me, it's no easy task. Recently, I was away from WdC for two months dealing with the real life, and I wanted to start fresh and update a few areas of my portfolio. When I got to the About Me section, I stared at it for ten minutes wondering what to write. I'd rather be in the dentist's chair, and in snooping around some portfolios around here, I'm not the only one who would rather hear the sound of the dentist’s drill.
The first thing people who visit see is the Portfolio Header. This spot is good for writing a few things in general about what we like to read or what genre we write, or what our goals are in the future with writing. The key word here is 'general'. Yes, we are comfortable with posting something that doesn't involve revealing too much personal information. But then, we stop dead at the About Me section. Should this be the same information as the Portfolio Header? No. It should include some facts about you personally. Why should we bother? It’s a good way to draw people further into reading your work. Depending on what you write, it will peak their interest and most likely, they will want to check your portfolio further.
It's totally up to you how much information you want to reveal. Below are a few tips to help with the writing of your bio:
Take advantage of the space for the biggest impact possible – it’s like your own personal calling card
Write in the third person and always begin with your name
Carefully select the details you want to share
Use humor. It can help break the ice and give a sense of who you are in a few short words.
The last point seems to work well with a lot of people, including myself. Here are a couple of bio’s from some authors that wrote a bit of humor:
Nixie🦊 :
"I'm a misplaced mountain-lover, stuck in flat, hot, Florida because this is where most of my family lives. I like hiking, and mountains, and lakes, and rivers..."
Fran 🌈🧜♀️
"I'm a funny kinda girl! I laugh a lot - mostly at myself or my husband Chris! I'm a public speaker... yes that's my job. Ohh the irony! Since I have a speech impairment and all."
Tiger Cub 🔱
"I was an ordinary child who fell deeply in love with that pesky little thing called science. Now of course, it's too late to break up and I am an aspiring med student. I have an unhealthy obsession for pets of all kinds and reading well-written dark fantasy. I love sketching portraits, singing - that said, please wear earmuffs in my vicinity - and of course, writing."
Robert Waltz
"An international man of mystery, Waltz is a puzzle wrapped in an enigma. Kind of a puzzle burrito, actually. With conundrum cheese and secret sauce. And a side of Riddle Rice."
Over the years at WdC, I've revealed so much about myself. Here's a couple of bio snippets from the past two years:
2013
Five Fun Facts About Me:
Fact One: I don't like talking about myself.
Fact Two: I have a crazy sense of humor.
Fact Three: People don't 'get' my sense of humor.
Fact Four: Some don't realize when I'm being sarcastic and wonder if they should laugh or run for the hills.
Fact Five: I really don't like talking about myself.
2014
I'm still working on something snappy for 2015, but I keep thinking about making a dentist appointment instead. I had no problem posting a funny image which says:The Sarcasm is Strong with This One. If the About Me section has you stumped, consider giving it a try! If you can’t think of anything to write, believe it or not, a Bio Generator link exists to inspire you.

One last tip to consider: You should change your bio often or once a year – great -- I better start writing some samples right now . . .
Lornda relates funny family stories and tells goofy jokes. . . . Lornda hates spiders and smashes them to smithereens if she sees one. . . . Lornda is shy and . . . *the WdC crowd breaks out in hysterical laughter*
