Adventures always seem to take place out of the blue. Something comes up and our protagonist is racing off for greener pastures, to rescue to damsel (or indeed the master) or to find some object that will prolong life or something of the sort. While these adventures always happen spur of the moment, there are certain things the protagonist must consider when setting off, such as how long it will take to get to point B in order to plan and prepare and make sure they have enough provisions to get them through. After all, my worst nightmare would be going on a journey and not having enough to eat! I'm bad enough when I've had to go through a few hours of hunger.
The timelines I am considering however, are the lengths of time that the journey the main character takes will last. We have seen journeys that span days, weeks, months, even the years (take the Lord of the Rings for example). When writing such huge journeys, it's important that the author had a timeline to work from in order to keep the storyline moving forward in the logical order that is intended.
When working on a short story or perhaps something longer, make sure you timeline your story. Keep things moving in a forward motion and keep things consistent. If one chapter ends with it raining and the second chapter starts in that same place only moments later, will the weather have suddenly changed? If you're working on a longer piece and the characters are undertaking a big journey, what sort of season are they walking in or is it across several seasons? What is the weather like in correspondence with the timeline?
I have to admit that creating and sticking to a timeline is one of my weak points when I'm in the midst of writing but I always find that planning ahead and physically writing it out, mapping out the plot points onto the line, helps me stay on track and keep the characters in check.
How do you work your timelines? How do you make sure your adventures happen in a timely manner? |
Check out these pieces (both long and short) and think on the timeline while enjoying the story!
