Magic of Hugs

I was incredibly stressed this morning because of some schoolwork I have due that all hinge on a topic for a speech that has yet to be approved. I can’t move on to the audience analysis and outline for this speech until the topic is approved. I can’t research my topic effectively for an outline until that topic is approved and I can’t do the audience analysis until I create a survey (that 12 people need to fill out and send back) all by WEDNESDAY NIGHT, without a topic. Every time I submit a topic it is shot down and every suggestion my teacher has for me – I don’t have a passion for (not even a little one), which is essential for this type of speech.

So, this morning all I want to do is cry my frustration, with clenched fists, when I found out my latest topic was politely refused. My husband took one look at me and gave me a long, lingering, stress-combating hug. Just the pressure of his arms holding onto me and allowing me to just be loved, made me forget – for the moment – what I was facing; and in doing so, gave me the strength to do just that. Face it head on.

When I was a twenty-something newlywed in the 1980’s (uh-oh, my age is showing again) I remember watching a program on PBS and was excited to find out that I wasn’t the only one who believed hugs had magical qualities. Dr. Leo Buscaglia insisted we needed a daily quota of them! Armed with this knowledge I proceeded to make sure I got my daily allowance, and in so doing, I helped others get theirs. What a great return on a momentary investment, eh?

I had forgotten that in my busier life and I am truly blessed that this morning, my husband remembered the power that pulses from those magical hugs!

Dr. Leo Buscaglia, who died in 1998, was an education professor at the University of Southern California and even taught a noncredit course on love.

Oh, yes, the things we do for love, especially after opening mouth and inserting foot half way up to the knee. You're correct, Red, the little things matter as much, if not more, than the big things.

I absolutely LOVE the beans story. Perfect, short, and sweet...and SO telling!

That was the sweetest story. ^_^ You know, I personally believe it's the little personal sacrifices that make the biggest difference. I know that grand sweeping gestures of affection such as sending your beloved a thousand and one roses seems like the end all but I feel that eating a meal that you'd never touch otherwise shows more oomph. It's more personal and those little things add up over time.

I was just thinking, as I was inspired by my recent studies, that I'd be interested in seeing a dual perspective on 'love'. Men and Women tend to view love differently in some ways. Not as differently as some would think but different all the same.

What a great idea and one I'd love to tackle one day soon!

Start sending in your comments on this one, folks! I'll be putting them in an upcoming newsletter! THANKS!
