About This Newsletter

Noticing Newbies Newsletter is geared to help members get acquainted with Writing.com -- there is so much do and all the features can be overwhelming! Our goal is to help you make your time here more fun and manageable.

Each week we select and showcase new items (poetry, short story, polls, etc.). Exposure for an item helps to bring you more rates and reviews; and by bringing more member interaction, that will give you the opportunity to build friendships. It is a two way street, so remember to reciprocate reviews.

"There's someone that you haven't already met, go introduce yourself to him or her. Walls and labels can't keep you from the people who are so similar to you in spirit. There's a friendly face behind every door if you pick the right moment to knock. Once you start your wave of creative outreach, it turns into a contagious force. People are waking up and smiling at each other, sharing their dreams without hesitation. This community is worth something."

Letter from the editor

Hi New Members!

I must say that it has been a while since I have interviewed someone for the newsletter; In order to make up for lost time, I asked this special lady to stop by. She is an extremely talented writer and her specialty is *Heart* ROMANCE! I admire her ability as a writer to connect with her readers. I'm excited she has taken the time to answer some questions; she occasionally hosts contests, but for the most part, she enjoys her privacy and keeps a low profile on the site. Please give a warm welcome to La Belle Rouge Author Icon!!

Laurencia: Hi Labelle! As you know, I have been wanting to interview you for a while now, and FINALLY here we are! Thank you for taking the time. My first question is, what have you been doing with yourself lately? Besides writing, do you have any other interests/hobbies or employment that takes your time away from writing?

Labelle Rouge: Hi Laurencia it's always a pleasure to talk to you. I have been writing, writing, working on a couple of manuscripts. I buy investment real estate and renovate it so that has been a time stealer lately. As for hobbies I do little for enjoyment but write. I do enjoy sailing in the summertime and gardening.

L: You are been quite busy with the publishing of your poetry book titled Cherished, do you have anything else in the works?

LR: I am working on a volume of sensual poetry and a collection of erotic short
stories and I've been editing a little for a friend's manuscript.

L: You have been a member longer than I have...how has Writing.Com affected you as a writer?

LR: In the beginning I made connections with others who helped me tremendously to hon my skills. The encouragement from other writers is always a help. Having a place to call your literary "Home" is good and maintaining connections to those of like mind and interests centers you I believe.

L: Who or what is the most important thing in your life?

LR: As for who, those I love as for what I suppose it would have to be self expression.

L: Who is your favorite author and why?

LR: That is a really hard question Laurencia. I have so many. Pablo Neruda is one of my all time favorite poets, his work is very real and unique in expression and imagery and emotive effect.

L: What is one thing that people on W.C. do not know about you?

LR: I put so much of myself into my writing I fear I have few secrets left! Some may not be aware that I am not only a mother, but a grandmother.

L: How long have you been writing? And, what do you do to keep yourself from the dreadful writer's block?

LR: I have written since I could hold a pencil, it's always been important to me but more so in the last ten years. Laurencia I have honestly never had writer's block but for those who have here is a journal entry that may be of assistance:

"Invalid EntryOpen in new Window.

L: What is your favorite thing to do on Writing.Com?

LR: I come here to read sometimes, and to catch up on news from friends. I post almost everything I write here because it is by far the most organized and compartmentalized site available and to a prolific writer this is of great importance.

L: You have hosted your share of writing contests, and good ones I must say. What would you give a new member for advice on how to run their own contest?

LR: Be very specific with your rules and the guidelines as to what you expect in an entry. Do something really creative and different each time. Challenge your entrants to go a step further in their creativity and to write something they can be proud of.

L: When judging entries for a contest, what do you look for in a writer's item? What makes that item stand out from the rest?

LR: I like it to be well written with proper spelling and punctuation but for me the supreme test is creativity. Something that catches my attention, challenges my imagination.

L: I noticed you are a member on a site called Reverie, which is a support group for women victims to cyberspace predators. Are you part of the ladies group who got the forum started or how did you become a part of this group?

http://groups.msn.com/reveriegirls/_whatsnew.msnw?&pps=k

LR: I am one of the founders of the group. I think it serves an important function for those who are being preyed upon or stalked online. It was founded by a group of ladies who had experienced the distress of being the target of such predators. I was stalked more than once by more than one person and at the time there was nowhere that I knew of to go for support and there was no site as specific in exposing the predators' and stalkers' methods of operation and sites frequented. I feel really good that Reveriegirls is there now to give the support and education I wish had been there for me when I was experiencing this problem.

L: Last question, if you had just one thing to say or any advice to give to our Writing.Com members, what would that be?

LR: Be true to yourself, who you are, what you feel and want to write. Don't let anyone tell you what you should or shouldn't write and don't be afraid to try new forms and genres. Take constructive criticism and use it to improve your work, take the destructive kind and throw it in the mental garbage can, ignore it and get on with your goals and the enjoyment of your writing.

I would just like to add a thanks to all who have read my work and been so supportive of me on Writing.com. And thank you Laurencia for the interview.

Hey Laurencia,

I always enjoy your newsletters, but I was truly touched by the nine-year-old story. I must start as a nine-year-old every morning.

I love what Noticing Newbies does to help out the newer members of Writing.com. When you accepted my submission a while back, I was inspired to keep on writing. Now I'm on my second Upgraded membership and no signs of slowing down. Thank you for inspiring me and the other newbies you show here to continue writing.

Now I love to hear feedback like this! I'm so glad you are still writing. Take care!

I truely enjoy your Newsletter and look forward
to seeing it in my inbox. I love the stories on
writers block, as I have been dealing with that lately.

Thank you so much for your support. I hope you are writing.

Thank you, Laurencia, for listing one of my poems in the newsletter. I feel so honored! As a newbie, I look forward to learning from all of you pros on this site. I have gained so much already.

Thanks a bunch-

It was my pleasure!

I'm soooooo glad to be back in the writing community :) due to health, emotional problems, a divorce and a new marriage. I have been out of the writing community for the last 3 to 4 years.
I'm trying to get back into the swing of things and this site has helped a lot! but finding my way around it is very very confusing! :) you have helped me a lot though, and I think you for that.
I hope to start making money with my poetry again real soon so i can stay with this site.
anyway i just wanted to say Hi to everyone and thank you for helping us newbies :)
wolfpoetress

It's great you have returned and good luck with your writing.

My biggest challenge in writing is not the characters I started out with, but the characters that have popped up in the story. It started small, now I am on a three-book roll.
{suer:ipsofacto}

Lol, well that can happen. Just keep up the pace.

Wow, I never thought of writer's block as something that could be poetic, but you managed to pull it off quite nicely! That was a really cute little poem about writer's block. I found it to be very amusing. Keep up the great work with the newsletter!

Thank you very much!

Someone once said that the art of writing comes in the re-writing. You re-state that very nicely in this piece on beginnings. You also caught one of my main faults, I.e., trying to make every sentence, paragraph, thought, perfect the first time out. It’s an annoying habit, even to me, but its also compulsory.

I try to have an outline, of sorts, so that I have some guidance as I write, but the truth is that I will never know where spontaneity will lead me unless I am spontaneous. Thanks.
tinman Author Icon

Yes, many writers, including myself have edited while writing and it is a hard habit to break, but can be done with some discipline.

Thank you for your continued support. Please don't hesitate to drop me a note. I love hearing from you.

See ya December 14th, 2005!
