A Symbiotic Relationship
A little over three years ago I wrote about starting your own writer's group ("Growing Your Own Writer's Group" ) Many folks do that here on Writing.Com by starting a group. But is there a writer's group in your community? Have you ever looked?
WDC is a great community for writers. We offer the ability to write in almost 100 different genres. And while I haven't checked for exact numbers, I suspect many genres have a group of like-minded members who've banded together to promote that genre and enhance their writing. While any member of WDC may review their offerings, group members may have special insights from their penchant for that genre to help their fellow group member.
That said, the very diversity of WDC's members offers views that might not normally be considered within a group focused on one genre. Local writer's groups fall into that category.
One distinct advantage a local group has is the ability to interact face to face with another person. Verbal communication is faster, and facial nuances and gestures makes for better understanding. Online interaction is slower, and the back and forth of email can be cumbersome.
I'm not trying to put WDC down. On the contrary, since I joined some seven years ago, I've grown as a writer in ways I could never have imagined. I'm pretty sure a local writer's group would not have made that kind of positive impact on my passion. But, don't discount the effect a local group can have.
Recently I attended a local meeting and made a couple contacts that I'm certain will take me to the next step of my writing journey--publication Honestly, I've been rather complacent about pursuing publication But being around other folks who are more proactive in that regard sparked me to move forward.
Networking, whether online or in person, is necessary to grow as a writer. I submit we can use both WDC AND a local writer's group on this writing journey. Best of luck with your writing endeavors.
