About three years ago, on one of those sleepless nights, a character decided to wander into my mind. Tall, dark, brooding. He sat in a darkened room with a glass in his hand, legs crossed. That's all. I couldn't see his face, couldn't figure out anything about him. He told me nothing. Not a single word uttered, no movement. Well dressed, as if ready for a party or he came from one. Alone in an impersonal house with nothing to say.
That was a very long time ago. I tried figuring out what his deal was, why he sat there all alone on New Year's eve. Yes, somehow I knew that part. Nothing came to mind. Taking action, I decided his future for him - he murdered someone, went to a party to have an alibi and now that the party was over, he relaxed at home. Nope. He wouldn't hear of it. So I, at long last, gave up on this stranger and put him somewhere in the back of my mind.
Every once in a while, when I laid down, he'd pop into my mind, same picture, same posture, that same glass in his hand. To say that I was frustrated would be an understatement. What was I supposed to do? I kept asking myself what his deal was, but as before, I only received silence. In the end, I'd just soak up the scene around him every time he decided to pay me a visit in the darkness. No point in stressing over it, right?
A month ago, I turned off the lights and there he was again! I didn't bother to question anything or speculate. When he's ready he'll tell me his own story, I decided. And he did. He finally did! (Sadly) he didn't murder anyone, but his story is one that should be told.
In the end, while I was relieved to uncover the secrets of this stranger and get to know him better, I'll miss that tall, dark, brooding figure sitting in the chair, nursing his drink. The silence which surrounded him felt comfortable after a while. Now, I've see the mess he calls a life and I must find a solution for him.
When you have a character such as my mystery man, what do you do? Do you just go for it or do you wait (im)patiently until they're ready to reveal the story to you?
'til next time!
