Desire can be used as a noun or a verb, but I’d like to think when it coms to romance, the verb fits the bill. As defined, desire is a strong wish or a want (for something). However, to be effective, desire needs a little tinder (lack), some kindling (yearning), and fuel (a weakness, a flaw or a limitation) then a spark (an event.)
Desire is often central to a character’s motivation, but it needs to painted with a layered brush to tug at the reader’s heartstrings.
#1: LACK
Our hero must lack something. This “something” should be deeper than just female companionship. He could be lonely, bored, or unfulfilled. Perhaps there’s something missing in his life he can’t define. Perhaps there is a broken promise involved, or he’s ill, or poor.
#2: YEARNING
This lack creates a yearning that's unfulfilled, vague, or undefined. It’s how our hero wants to live his life, or be the kind person he wants to be. Why is the yearning unfulfilled, vague, or undefined?
#3 WEAKNESS
Because our hero has a:
Weakness; they’re stubborn, or lazy, or a coward.
Wound: they have an injury that has impaired their ability to love.
Limitation: inexperience, an illness, or perhaps they lack social status.
Flaw: they’re cynical, greedy, or vain.
#4 BANG!
An incident occurs in our hero’s life and triggers his desire. He wants to win the heroine’s heart, solve the crime, complete the adventure.
Desire is an emotion all readers can identify with. Haven’t we, at some time in our life desired something/someone? Breathing fire into your character’s desire will only heighten your reader’s interest in the story.

Feedback from my 9 DEC 2015 Romance/Love NL:

I loved the movie While you were sleeping! I saw it a long time ago and have forgotten most of the plot. I remember that there was a love triangle between Sandra Bullock and two men, but the rest is kind of a hazy fog. It was a comedy. I have yet to see Gravity, which the critics didn't like too much, but I am curious about it. Have you seen Gravity or Miss Congeniality? I saw Miss Congeniality about her being a beauty pageant contestant. Thanks for the newsletter.
I've seen all the movies you've mentioned. I love Sandra Bullock. She's a great actress. I always try to catch her movies. I didn't see the Blind Side yet, still wanting to. Glad you enjoyed the NL!
StephBee is a 911 dispatcher for LAPD. Her latest romance is “A Princess is Always Right,” a steampunk romance. Can Sophia stop Jonas from finding Nikola Tesla with Jax’s help? 5 Stars, Liz Gavin, Reader: “ A gripping time traveling story!”
