Martin Luther King Jr. Day: A Day of Service

As I'm writing this newsletter, it is Monday, January 18th, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day here in the United States. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement, but he was also a believer that everyone can make a difference in his or her community. Everyone has something to give, no matter how small it may be.

Many people get hung up on the idea of "service," but it doesn't have to be something like joining the military. Volunteering at your local library or food bank is "service." Cleaning up your neighborhood is "service." Any act of kindness or helpfulness is "service." In fact, volunteering in your community is one of the best ways to show your appreciation for everything your community has done for you. You likely have a roof over your head, a local grocery store, a community library, and free resources at your disposal. Instead of taking them for granted, consider volunteering for one of them in return.

Believe it or not, volunteering can also lead to traditional romantic love. My boyfriend and I met while serving together in AmeriCorps, and we know a handful of other "Ameri-Couples." Like-minded individuals often meet doing mutual hobbies, and volunteering is a great way to meet people who believe in the same issues you do!

"Everybody can be great because everybody can serve." -Martin Luther King, Jr.
