Earlier today I was thinking about an action sequence and I was pondering the old story “The Turtle and the Hare”. We should all be familiar with this fable but today I want to use the slow moving turtle to base my Action/Adventure editorial on.
Let me start you pondering with this question… To have a successful action scene is speed the main ingredient? In the previously mentioned story, we all know that the rabbit races to be way out in front of the tortoise. The rabbit carries the action with his feet, his twitching nose and the fast moving insults. The turtle, although slower in his movement is actually what all of the action is based on, don’t you think?
For one, the rabbit tires easily and pulls off the beaten path to rest while the turtle keeps a steady pace trudging along the parade route…one step, two step, three step and on and on and on. He doesn’t stop, he may not always see the finish line but he believes that there is one and he won’t quit until he finds it.
What kinds of “turtles” are trudging along in your novels, novellas or longer short stories? If there is no underlying story you can have non-stop action with nothing to base it on. |
