The fascination with dystopia has begun not too long ago. The destruction of the existing world and rebuilding it all again. Ages ago, our fascination had been more with utopia. Things have changed. However, if there is one thing that is hard to grasp, it's the way how people perceive a future world.
There are five book series/shows/movies which focus on a far way future and what the world would and possibly could look like. You may not have seen or heard any of this, but if you are a fantasy writer I'm sure that you've at least gotten wind of it. The Maze Runner, the Shannara Chronicles, Divergent series, Hunger Games, and the The Walking Dead.
The Maze Runner went from a decent fantasy movie to something far fetched and quite confusing just to prolong the inevitable fate. Shannara Chronicles are set in a future world where dwarfs aren't such small creatures, elves seem to rule the world and human race is almost extinct. The Hunger Games are the teenager's favorite - a world where there's poor and powerful, and the poor are seen as prey, with a chosen few to entertain the rich and powerful masses. Divergent Series almost did the trick by creating a world where utopia exists, a mirage in a dystopian world, but that's not entirely true. The future in those books and movies shows something quite unexpected. The Walking Dead - however dysfunctional with an incurable disease - shows much more promise than any of the others combined. They are all based on the same principals - looking for justice, a world with harmony, survival. They are similar in many ways, but The Walking Dead's future is not too distant.
Creating dystopia is as if someone handed you a blank canvas and told you to draw whatever you'd like. Having a world where everything has changed is nothing but an opportunity to create the world you think is our future. It is not an alternate reality you get to create. The timeline is the same, your task is to figure out where you want to start.
The idea of a blank canvas to create a new world is a wonderful one. Your imagination is the only limitation. Where do you begin? Who are the characters? What is the plot? What does the future look like? The possibilities are endless. The planning outrageous! You're hyped up to do the work and are ready to begin.
What is the main thing to keep in mind when writing a dystopian fantasy? Creating a world one can relate to. We can always relate to people. Can we see ourselves in the reality you have created? Can you?! You are the writer. It is up to you to invent a place where another person can see themselves in. Second, third and fourth opinions are very important with this.
