Is it possible that we are granted multiple lifetimes? There are those who certainly believe this to be the case.
This week's Spiritual Newsletter, then, is all about reincarnation. |

If you have read my newsletters before, you will have read my discussions on the afterlife, and what form our existence in such an afterlife might take. You will have also read my thoughts on the soul. What I haven't written about before is the possibility of reincarnation. Not everyone believes that we live just the one life on Earth, and then either move on or that that's it, our existence is over entirely. Some believe that we may have multiple lifetimes, learning along the way. And that it is possible that we meet up with others throughout these lifetimes, and that our connection in the now is affected by our connections with them in the past.
One of my favourite books, Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley touches upon this topic. It is an Arthurian novel, but throughout the story it explores different faiths and the tensions that can rise between them. Early on in the story Igraine meets Uther Pendragon, and both feel that they have known the other for a long time. They share a dream in which they were romantic partners, and they feel that it is more than a dream – it was a glimpse at a past existence.
I personally don't know that much about reincarnation, but I think that it is an interesting concept. I know that I am not alone in visiting a place for the first time, yet experiencing a feeling that I have been there before. Not that long ago my mother and I were talking about a trip we made to Paris quite a few years ago, and we remembered that we both felt a sense of coming home. Both of us feel a deep interest in the same periods of history, the same places, the same historical figures.
I admit to being skeptical of those who claim to have been great historical figures. For one, there are several people who claim to have been the same person, like Napoleon, or a Roman Emperor, or Cleopatra. That obviously doesn't add up. And you don't tend to hear about people who claim to have been a simple farmer, or a maid, or a butcher. At least, I haven't heard anyone claim that.
I did once have a dream that has stuck with me. It felt very real – all my senses were involved in the experience. I was on the slope of a hill, looking out over a battlefield. The battle had ended, and it wasn't a pleasant view. There were many birds out there. I wasn't alone – there were two other women with me. Our clothes were old-fashioned. I remember feeling sadness, and fear. Then pain, and I knew that I was dying.
Where that dream came from, I don't know. It doesn't have to mean anything, as I have many unusual dreams. Still, life is a mystery, and I am always open to learning about different views and different beliefs. Who can truly know who is right and who is wrong?
I like the idea of having more than one lifetime to learn. Though I do then think... what if someone's life is filled with suffering? The kind of suffering that hardly, or never, lets up? Does that mean that they have done bad things in a previous life? A life that they don't know anything about? The soul might, once the life is over, gather all these different experiences and move up another step of the ladder (so to say), but that doesn't take away from what is felt in the now – all the pain, and hardship and despair.
I would be interested in learning the views and experiences of any readers who believe in reincarnation. If you have any items related to this subject, please feel free to send them in and I will share some in my next newsletter. Or feel free to leave a comment.
I am just someone exploring different faiths, different beliefs, different spiritual journeys. I will never claim to have all the answers. This is your newsletter, too, so please feel welcome to share, or to suggest different topics for discussion. I am open to them all.
Until next time, I wish you a month filled with joy and inspiration,
Kitti the Red-Nosed Feline |
