About This Newsletter

Hello! It's Marci, and I'm ready to talk about funny food... or food being funny. I haven't decided which. *Laugh*

Quotes by Jim Gaffigan:

You could be a genius -- you try to write a postcard, you come across like a moron anyway. It's always like, 'This city's got big buildings. I like food. Bye.

Letter from the editor

Food is Funny

At least it is for comedian Jim Gaffigan. I’ve watched two of his comedy specials recently, and he had me rolling the whole time. There is a simple reason for that. I can totally relate to his comedy. He says what we are all thinking, but puts his own unique twist on it. I’ve got to be honest. My favorite act was about McDonalds and I laughed while saying, “yep… that’s right… oh, that’s so true…”

I looked up some info about Jim Gaffigan on Wikipedia, and it states that his comedy revolves mostly around fatherhood (he has five kids), observations, and food. However, I would say that more than fifty percent revolves around food. In fact, on Sunday Gaffigan tweeted:

“They opened a Mexican restaurant right next to my apartment in NYC. It was nice knowing everyone. Please tell my children I loved them.”

If you don’t know who Jim Gaffigan is, then you must never watch television. He’s had several starring roles in mainstream television on shows such as The Ellen Show, That 70’s Show, and most recently, a show loosely based on his life called The Jim Gaffigan Show. You can find it on TV Land. But we probably know him best from all the commercials he’s starred in over the years. In fact, you can barely watch television without seeing him on the commercials for one of America’s largest car manufacturers. His commentary on those commercials keeps me and my family cracking up.

So, let’s get back to the funny in food. Here are some of Jim’s greatest food jokes!

We’re never satisfied when it comes to food. "You know what’d be good on this burger? A ham sandwich. Instead of a bun, let’s use two donuts. That way we can have it for breakfast. Look out McGriddle. Here comes the donut-ham-hamburger!"

I was looking at a bottle of water; they have nutritional facts printed on the side. You know, I'm no chemist, but I have a rough idea what's in water.

Whenever you go out [to eat] you gotta get the appetizer. 'Cause the appetizer's just an excuse for an extra meal. You're always like "Let's see, I will start with the 80 buffalo wings...and do you have a low-cal blue cheese? 'Cause I don't wanna fill up too much."

It would be kinda embarrassing trying to explain what an appetizer is to someone from a starving country, though. "Yeah the appetizer, that's the food we eat before we have our food...No no you're thinking of dessert, that's food we eat after we have our food."

Make sure you look up some of his specials which you can find on Netflix. I promise non-stop laughing, and maybe it will help you come up with some fun food stories of your own. After all… this is a writing newsletter. This should be a jumping off place for our own inspiration!

Until next time… live, laugh, (eat), and write!
Marci

"It was nice to read about the Olympic bloopers. I missed them this year due to some medical issues and a faulty TV antenna. Then you talking about not being an athlete reminded me of taking PE when I was younger. I was one of those kids that loved playing different sports in PE. Racketball, Handball, Basketball, Baseball - I even played a little bit of LaCross. Now I wasn't REALLY good at any of them, just good enough to play with some of the boys. *Smile* But I suppose that if I wasn't more into writing and art and more into one of these sports, I'd be a very different person today."

I love the interviewer to the Jamaican athlete who said, the national anthem was being played and he turned to the flag and stood there. Really lady? It's your National anthem, even people representing other countries know you're supposed to stand and look at the flag out of respect.

I wouldn't really consider this a "fail", but after I quit tennis, my mom told me that one of the coaches in the after-school tennis program in middle school had told her I'd only be ever good at social tennis. *Laugh* Obviously his prediction came true- after switching to dance, I only played tennis once- and it was definitely not competitive- I made contact with about 20% of the balls, and about 50% of them went into the net. *Bigsmile*

Hello Marci Missing Everyone Author Icon! I really enjoyed your newsy NL this very moment! I love sports - always have - and yet, my admiration for you has escalated to unknown heights now, what with your "stick-to-it-tivenss" has you creating a NL about a topic that you do not partake in makes me marvel at your tenacity! I loveLoveLOVE your story about the poor gymnast who, upon landing upon her buttooski, remained upon her buttooski - for quite awhile, yes? I think I know why? She was checkin' out her final score - and probably was floored with the result! *Rolling* See how much fun it is to be a spectator!? (wink wink) *Wink* Just the same, I've gone and reviewed the majority of authors you've listed here in your NL as well; thank you kindly for taking the time to find/post them for our enjoyment! PS - guess what is playing on the TV as we speak?!? *Heart* You guessed!! USA! USA!!

Hi Marci, great newsletter on the Olympics. I didn't see much because I was busy at WdC but you brought me up to speed.

I especially liked: "Olympic flame: Ready, steady, glow!" It is the motto of the Olympics I think.

My personal memory of sports at highschool? I was always dreading the NOT being picked for the different teams. That I would end up being the last kid standing, then the teams would go...hmmm, who wants this one in their team? Fortunately that didn't happen much, but it always was a fear of mine since I, like you, wasn't into gymnastics very much.

Thanks for all the great feedback from last time. It was a true encouragement! And I cracked up at some of your responses.

Question for next time... What are some funny food stories or jokes from your past?
