Gifts are great but for writing a story, sometimes an action can be even better in romance. |

When it comes to this time of year, working in retail and with Christmas nearing, the topic of presents comes up often. What will I get my sister? There is a secret santa at work. And I've heard many Christmas carols over the radio with the same songs repeated now for weeks. It's everywhere and while I understand/appreciate the gift concept, sometimes I like to hear or see more actions than stuff involved. By this I mean, the idea of doing something as a gift instead of giving a physical present.
I even made it a prompt in a contest since I'm the judge this week. Over in the Weekly Quickie Contest, I have a prompt about having the character do something as a gift instead of giving a physical present. The idea works for romance/love stories as well as erotica because we like to read about actions and the things characters do to show their love.
One thing that works with this idea is the availability of conflict. Granted, physical gifts can create conflict too, whether one is given or maybe even not. But options also exist for the characters to have actions and struggles around the holidays, for them to make gestures and do something that really shows the giving spirit. Those are some stories that I would like to read, where people aren't just focused on the commercial side and what they do in order to show the joys of the holidays. And of course, how they show their love by doing something romantic.
What will your character do? The holidays are good times for things like, volunteer work. I had one story where the character always volunteered around Christmas serving food to those that needed help and that location sparked a possible date. Maybe there is something their love interest has always wanted to do but never gotten the chance, or maybe they really need some gesture. It could even be enduring that family gathering despite circumstances making things awkward (check out lgbt contest for a prompt that could involve that one). Many options are available.
Either way, there are many romance stories waiting to be told. Some of them can include a gesture or action as a gift, whether it's a holiday or not. Try it out and let me know what actions you think work in a romantic story. |

What type of romantic gesture or action would you use in a story as a gift or present?
Last time I edited the Romance/Love Newsletter, I got to talk about costumes because it was around Halloween.
Comment by Quick-Quill
Not dress up, but I always wanted to write a story about people who belong to Furry Fandom. I saw it on an old CSI program. They dress up in full animal costumes. Act out and even have relations in their costumes to be on equal terms. No judgement. You are your character.
Comment by Starr Phenix
I think costumes work well for both romance and erotica. As you mentioned, they usually serve a certain purpose in erotic stories, but what fun they can be when used in romance, too! Two masked characters meet and make a connection without knowing who the other is! There are endless possibilities with that! Also, thank you so much for featuring my poem in the newsletter!
