Imagine you are wandering through a small town library browsing the bookshelves, when you find an old, leatherbound volume, tucked behind other books. You open it to find yellowed pages lined with faint old fashioned handwriting. It is hard to read, but a few words leap out at you: "danger", "crime", and "hidden." What mystery fan would not want to know more?
Before you have read it, any book is a mystery, but old books are especially mysterious. Strange old volumes are a great addition to a mystery story.
Maybe your characters are searching for a rare old book that has disappeared. Certain old books can be worth millions of dollars depending on who wrote them, when they were written, and how many copies exist.
Very old books were written and illustrated by hand and are valuable as works of art. Illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages were hand lettered with calligraphy and embellished with an elaborate drawing and painting process that may have taken years to complete.
Other old books sometimes contained fore edge paintings, or a picture painted on the edges of the pages. In some cases, the painting is applied to be seen only when the book is closed, while in others, the pages must be slanted to see the complete painting.
Maybe the book itself has no monetary value, but your characters must find it for information or clues it contains. It might contain the directions to a hidden treasure, or it might be a diary kept by the only witness to a crime that happened long ago. Finding the book might be only the first step in solving the mystery. A character might have written clues in code or concealed them in a fore edge picture.
Something to try: Write a mystery story that features a strange old book.
