Hi all! I am thrilled to be a guest editor for this edition!
As a Captain in our "WdC SuperPower Reviewers Group" I often run Review raids to challenge members to review--and sometimes outside the box! In one such raid, we offered contests and activities as a theme. Some queries came back! "How do we do that with content?" So... in this newsletter I have a few tips for reviewing these fun contributions to WDC. Yes! Let's give a little romance and love to these unsung creations that sometimes are in the shadows of the review world. |

If you have ever been challenged to review smaller items with a set limit of characters, like in Game of Thrones, or group activities, or just have no idea what to say when you review a poll or contest, you are welcome to play with these tips.
Like any other item authors have put heart, soul and imaginations into creating these items for entertainment, enlightenment, information, challenge and to inspire and encourage us to write!
As with any review, we want to be respectful and positive yet helpful in our comments. So in a nut shell:
Say honestly what you like, what didn’t work, what worked really well for you as a potential participant and then the mechanics of language, clarity of writing etc as a reviewing author! Say it with heart and enthusiasm. Sound familiar?
Ok. I know. Some specifics would be helpful. Some questions or ideas may not apply to every activity.
Overall Presentation:
Does the forum/item look well organized? Is it easy to read?
Does the forum /page appeal to you visually, overdone, or too plain.
Are the fonts or colours hard to read?
Was colour/ML/font used to emphasize important things, subtitles etc?
Does the title fit the idea/theme?
Is the rating appropriate? Especially in interactive, campfires content etc.
Does it serve a specific purpose/niche/ interest as a contribution to WDC?
Is the voice inviting, enthusiastic, and is the vibe fun and inspiring?
You can comment on outlay, prizes, interesting or unique ideas.
Add to this, some tips for specific items:
For interactives, campfires:
Was the writing in introduction/opening good? Expressive? Appealing?
Were the parameters and set up easy to follow and have enough detail?
Were the title and tag line helpful to give a clue to the theme?
For cnotes:
As above, was the welcome bit inviting?
Graphics: Were they sharp, clean, expressive, aesthetic on the page.
What did you like in the cnotes-- favourite messages, variety, price, etc.
Did you have any questions: eg. were pictures made by the author?
For polls, quizzes:
Were there enough responses, logical, relevant?
Your opinion on the opening introduction--short and sweet, direct,
Would you like to see something added--like the rationale for choosing the poll topic, adding colour or artistic appeal, depending on the topic?
Was the quiz challenging enough, too tough, too easy? Did it serve its intent? Sometimes these are easy to be fun!
Contest/Raffle/Auction Forum :
Are the rules clearly stated and easy to understand? Is something missing?
If something was not clear or confused you, it might confuse others, so mention it.
Is the date clearly placed? Does the length of time seem suited to the item content?
Were there helpful links perhaps, or even a bitem how to, for new comers?
Were there any added features (which distract or add to the contest} to expand the theme, teach or share more on the genre or topic? eg. as in Fanfiction item like "Star Trek Poetry CONTEST " , or "DreamTime Dragon's Poem Contest" .
Recently someone mentioned using drop notes to me--for an item I did before we had them. Could they be used to simplify pages to an advantage?
You can comment on prizes, unique ideas or themes.
If you have had experience with these activities, your sage advice tips can give the creator valueable information.
In a Forum, were the purpose and protocols clear?
For Crosswords, Word Finds:
How challenging did you find them? How fun, relaxing, appealing was it to do them? Did you learn anything, discover any interesting vocabulary?
Mechanics:
Look at grammar, punctuation, little glitches. It is easy for creators to miss those typos!
Personal taste/opinion:
Did you like the topic/ theme, type of activity?
Was it fun/challenging to participate in ?
Were there tweaks you might suggest? Or was it original, a pleasant place to visit?
These are a few ideas to get you started and I am sure, as you get going, you will just know what you honestly can say that will make your review shine and the recipient glow with pride and gratitude for your thoughtful and thorough acknowledgement of their bit of fun!
