What are some of your favorite romantic comedies? Mine is "While you were sleeping." Some all time favorites include, "Pretty Woman," "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," "Working Girl," and "Bridget Jones." Romantic Comedies blend two genres, romance and comedy, but why do we go see them? And in some cases see them over and again? What's the appeal?

Letter from the editor

So what is a "Romantic Comedy?" It's a funny movie, tv show, or play about two people who would seem to be perfect for each other but are kept apart due to circumstances beyond their control. Eventually, they get together and and there's a happy ending.

That's the basic plot. Our hero and heroine meet, become separated, realize they're met for each other and after overcoming all kinds of crazy, funny stuff, are reunited for good.

Some of the best known plays were written by a master. "The Taming of Shrew" by Shakespeare is one of my favorites. I think some of the reasons why romantic comedies are and remain popular involve humor and hope.

Romantic comedies are fairytales for adults. They pick up where fairytales left off of us when we were kids. They effortlessly infuse romantic themes such as "love conquers all," soul mates," and "love at first sight" into their plots. Since "romcoms" (romantic comedies) are light-hearted, many are inspirational.

Women want to find a man who is full of love, passion, and adventure. We want to think there's someone out there who would go the end of the world for us. For men, they want to find a woman who is funny, lighthearted, kind, genuine.

When it comes to the movies or a TV show, chemistry is key for the actors playing the hero/heroine. Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe bombed as "lovers" in "Proof of Life," but had an affair outside of the movie. Sandra Bullock has oodles of chemistry with many of her on-screen co-stars in her romcoms. Then there's Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith."

Ultimately, I think the big appeal of romantic comedies is that provide us, the viewers, with something we might be missing in our lives such a humor, romance, love, and even hope.

Question for you: *Heart* What's your favorite romantic comedy?

Great NL, Steph. Valentine's Day is not overrated. What is wrong with celebrating love
and honoring that celebration by giving it a day? After all, if we really had held on to
love, the world would not be in the mess that it is today.

Thanks for sharing, Joy. Personally, I don't think it's overrated, either. If anything,
it's over commercialized. I think that's why some, without "sweeties" might feel so down
in the dumps, because there's just so much commercialization in their faces.
