About This Newsletter

What I enjoy about April is seeing the evidence of spring come alive. Budding plants have tiny little leaves. Fresh scents are in the air. The grass is greener. The sun stays out longer. April is inviting.

And with that, I'll transition to the Titanic. I bet it looked real inviting to its passengers just as they were about to board. It was 10 April and the Titanic's crew worked furiously to prepare for their maiden voyage.

This April is the 105th Anniversary of the Titanic's first and only sailing and I thought I'd inspire with a real life Titanic romance.

Letter from the editor

The richest man in the world was in love. And it was a scandal. He could trace his roots back to Germany prior to the American Revolution. Tall, well built, with a rugged face and thick mustache, he wasn't handsome in a classical way, but he was worth 87 million when he died. He inherited his fortune and improved on it. He was John Jacob Astor IV.

In 1891, Jack, 27, married Ava Willing. She was 23. The marriage wasn't a happy one. Was it an arranged marriage or did they fall out of love? I couldn't find out. They had two children, Vincent and Ava, and in 1909, Ava sued Jack for a divorce. New York State gave it to her. She got 10 million in her settlement. (250 million in today's money.)

Now 47 and newly divorced, Jack met Madeleine Talmadge Force. He courted her with automobile drives and yacht trips. The press followed the couple everywhere. Engaged in August 1911, they wed in September 1911.

Of course Jack had caused an uproar with his 2nd marriage. He was 47, she was 18. He was the richest man n the world and had only been divorced for 2 years. Wanting to get away from the gossip, the newly wedded Astors took an extended honeymoon in Egypt. Happy and in love, Madeleine conceived in late October, early November 1911.

Jack wanted his baby born in the U.S. Now 5 months pregnant, he and Madeleine boarded the Titanic at Cherbourg, France on 10 April 1912.
The richest man in the world was in love and having a baby. What more dare he wish for?

4 days later, Titanic hit an iceberg. Jack made sure Madeleine made it onto a lifeboat. Even though he told 2nd Mate Lightoller she was in a delicate condition, Lightoller refused to let Astor get on the lifeboat.

Frustrated, Jack stepped aside. Madeleine and Molly Brown got on the lifeboat. Jack inquired which lifeboat his wife was on so he could find her later. Days after, the richest man in the world was found dead, floating in the Atlantic.

His son, John Jacob Astor VI was born in August 1912.

Question for you: Would you stand by and watch your wife enter a lifeboat on Titanic knowing you couldn't?

I'd love to hear your thoughts about the Titanic.

Feedback from my Romance/Love Newsletter DTD: 1 MARCH 2017

I love romantic comedies. While You Were Sleeping is definitely one of my all-time favorites. Others that top my list would be When Harry Met Sally ~ Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal did a great job as friends becoming lovers. Moonstruck ~ I still laugh every time Nicholas Cage tells Cher he's in love with her and she smacks him, saying "Snap out of it!" The Princess Bride is my #1. I don't think I could ever get sick of this movie. The Wedding Singer has a great soundtrack from the 80s that takes me back to my late teens. I think we all need a little diversion from time to time when life gets heavy, and a good romcom usually does the trick.

While you were Sleeping and When Harry met Sally are my top 2 favorites, too!
