Contest and Activity Themes

Some of the most appealing contests and activities I've seen have had themes. By a "theme" I mean the images, text and set up all relate to a subject.

Say you'd like to use the circus as a "theme". If you have an upgraded account, you could have your banner look like a big top and have clown related images for the contest dividers. If not, you can still use a theme to make your activity more attractive. There could be the Ringmaster as the judge, and have members who help with the activity be the Lion Tamer or the Trapeze Artists. The parts of the activity could be divided into the Three Rings.

It is helpful to remember our members come from all parts of the world. Not everyone has Spring at the same time or celebrates Independence Day on the same day. Still, I think a theme can help carry a common auction or contest to another level and gain more interest just by being "different". Being different can bring in more participation that the normal one-in-a-million raffle or auction.

Using your imagination and making an attractive and simple set-up will guarantee more participation. All the hard work you put into promoting your activity will be wasted if the members who visit your page don't understand the rules or have to navigate through too much to begin to participate. A reliable activity host is another important point. Delayed closing dates or unfulfilled prizes will hurt any future activities you may try to plan. Always communicate with your participants and be prepared to smooth any possible troubled waters.

To those of you who like to participate in contests and activities, give your hosts some feedback! Let them know if you see a typo or a possible error on their pages. Review their page just like you would anything else; let them know if they're succeeding or just confusing. So whenever possible, give an activity host some feedback even if you're unable to participate. You'll see more quality items to choose from, rather than a plethora of half-planned items.

Last month's question: How do you help others by linking?

Whata SpoonStealer Author Icon replied: I like to put in user links to my images when I upload them, especially if the maker has a shoppe here *Smile* I'll add some credits at the end of my poems, especially if someone has helped me to edit it. Most of my links are done through group work; making sure information is easy to access, suggesting items in genres they may like, etc. You make some great suggestions, thank you!

Jellyfish Author Icon answered: When I send a review, I always tell the person why I'm reviewing it - and if it is for a particular challenge or activity, I put an item link to this in the review *Smile*.

Thanks for the replies!
