About This Newsletter

Romance/Love Newsletter by Dawn

A discussion on a possible conflict in a romance story. At times, the main character or the love interest will have to make a big decision that will affect whether or not the couple will get to be together. How the characters handle the situation is part of what makes the story.

Letter from the editor

We make decisions every day. Some have more of an influence on our lives and those of the people around us more than others. The life of a novel character is no different. Many decisions get made during a novel. In a romance story, a decision can be something small or it can be a big one that can be connected as part of the major conflict for the story/character.

Sometimes, a decision is the spark that starts the storyline and brings about change in a character's life. Common in many genres whether it's Young Adult, Mystery, Fantasy or even Romance. We see a character having to decide to do or say something that gets the ball rolling. The reader starts to get to know the main character, the struggles at hand and everything else that goes along with the story. They can like the decision made or, at times, dislike it but there are reactions. So, decision are important.

In fact, the decision can be a big part of the climax and conflict in our story. The height of the story arc where everything is going wrong for the MC and the reader has to worry if the love will survive is a good place for a big decision.

Why am I rambling about decisions? Well, I'm working on a fantasy story idea that I've been toying with a different magic system. Not just fantasy though, as I do write for that newsletter too. Near the height of the story (as I've been developing the conflict, which is very important in any novel) is going to be a decision that one of the main characters has to face. He will have to decide between the more peaceful life he has always dreamed of having minus one particular person, or stay for the one he loves.

With romance, we often know how the story is going to end. It's a known genre for having specific requirements by the readers. But at the same time, within the story, there has to often be that doubt. And with putting a decision at the height of the story, with the right stakes in place, we can give the reader that doubt. Because it's not going to be easy to pick for the main character. There has to be something on either side of the decision that makes it possible for the character to want/need to pick either one. Even a loss no matter what is chosen.

That helps create the tension and the result when we see what the character decides unfold on the pages. Bring in the conflict and let the reader see what happens. What decision is going to be put forth in your story? What risk will be taken in the name of love? And what will your character do? Show us.

Ask & Answer

Does your character have to make a big decision when it comes to their love interest?

Last time, for this newsletter I discussed which character made the first move. Here is the comment sent in about the topic:

In the love stories I've managed to write, the love interest usually gets the ball rolling while the main character grapples with some issue (not always romantic). I'm not sure why that is. Maybe it reflects my oblivion/hesitancy when it comes to seeing when people are interested in me.
