New experiences can be daunting. That doesn't mean that we should stay away from them.
This week's Spiritual Newletter is all about changes and experiences, and the endless "what ifs".

Have you got any new experiences coming up in your life? Maybe you are heading for college, or have entered your final year and are thinking ahead to what’ll happen after graduation. Maybe you are looking for a new job, or pondering a career change. Maybe you are getting married. Whatever is in your future, I hope that it will go well. It can be daunting, though, can’t it?
I’ll be starting my Master’s degree next month and whenever I think about it I’m filled with a mixture of excitement and worry. I’m excited that I have made it this far. And the course looks very interesting. The worry stems from not yet knowing how much more difficult it will be than my undergraduate degree. What if it turns out that I can’t do it? What if I’ll bump right into the ceiling of my intelligence level? It is possible...
We face many “what ifs” when navigating our way through our time on this planet. There can be small “what ifs” on a day-to-day basis. Choices we must make, things we might be able to do differently or would have done differently if we’d known the outcome. What if we’d done that instead?
I can understand, then, why some people seek spiritual guidance when making big decisions or when facing big changes. Whether it’s through prayer, or conversation with a spiritual leader, there can be comfort in not facing everything alone. There can be a level of reassurance that what we are about to undertake is right for us. Or not, as the case may be.
I don’t follow a particular religion, and I am not the best at prayer. I do pray from time to time, and it can bring me a certain level of comfort, but I have not found any messages or new knowledge in it, like some people seem to. That means that all I can do is consider the possible consequences of my planned actions and hope for the best.
I get it wrong sometimes. I know that I am not the only one. I’ve known those who were on the wrong university course for them. People who were in a job that they severely disliked. I know people who entered a marriage full of hope of a happily ever after, yet they ended up divorced. It’s pretty horrible, but it happens.
Thing is, though... there is value in our experiences. We go through them and we learn what works, and what doesn’t. If it doesn’t, we are capable of change.
I didn’t go to university at the age many students do. I returned to education when I was an adult who’d had a few jobs. Yes, there were obstacles, and uncertainties, and it was incredibly daunting, but I did it and, as it turned out, it worked. If I had failed I would have found another job, a little wiser for having tried something different than before.
Changing careers when already in a job isn’t easy, either. There are responsibilities which are placed at risk. Yet, what if you’re unfulfilled and unhappy in your current position? And you’re facing being unhappy and unfulfilled for years, possibly even decades to come? Isn’t it worth looking around at other options? I believe that it is.
I also know a professional chef who wanted to spend more time with his family and retrained to run a local community centre. A former banker who now has his own graphic design company. A business manager who’s recently signed a record deal. All were worried and sure, they faced some struggles and insecurities when changing careers, but they are all happier than they were before.
I know what it’s like to close myself off from new experiences, out of fear and uncertainty. I do believe, however, that we should make the most of what we’ve got. Life is there to be lived. We’ve just got to embrace it and fill it what whatever we find to be worth our while.
