Motivation is a common sought after commodity. It's not strictly this little community or even writers in general who often seek out something to provide them with the will power to complete their tasks, whether it be story, poem or a different type of item here on WdC. Motivation is something we all search for from time to time and doesn't matter if we're new or have been here 10 years.
The question is: What motivates you?
I ask because the answer will depend on the individual. The next question might be where you do you draw your inspiration for writing if one feels so inclined to dig further. While similar, for now we'll stick to just the topic of motivation because it can be hard to keep going in many tasks and that includes writing. Like write now, we're in the middle of a novel writing challenge (November is NaNoWriMo) and at this point some people might be struggling just to keep putting down words. Even I have gotten rather slow this year putting me a bit behind in word count, especially considering my own personal goal.
Motivation is considered to be the reasons for action or general desire to do something. This can be many things like the reasons we go to work or the desire to improve ourselves by going to the gym. We might feel motivated to read 3 books in a month or write four short stories for contests on a writing site. There are many things we want to do and having reasoning behind them can help push us forward from just wanting to write to actually doing it.
Even just the act of joining this site can be a use of motivation. Having an account, a place to put the words and the many tools available here on writing.com can help the person who wants to write. It's designed as a tool for that purpose with most of our focus being on the task of creating through words. Just taking the steps by creating a username is a step forward with our goals in mind.
The thing about motivation to remember is that it's not always going to be there. Like inspiration (which is also a fleeting moment at times), sometimes you'll find it and other times you may just come up empty handed. There may be times where instead you might have to rely on discipline and habits in order to keep going. Even if it is there, we often have many reasons we want to do something, that want/reason will not always correlate into action. But at times it can help.
Looking for some motivation to write? Check out some groups, forums and contests here on the site. Contests help in particular because they have deadlines, which can be a useful motivation tool in getting something done. Groups will host different activities if people in the group are willing to put in some work in order to make the events success. We have many ways to get motivated here on the site and I hope you find something that will help encourage you to start and keep writing. |
