Quote for the week:
"Got a secret.
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you'll save.
Better lock it in your pocket,
Taking this one to the grave.
If i show you, then I know you wont tell what I said.
'Cause two can keep a secret if one of them is dead."

Secrets can be wonderful or terrible. For the purposes of horror stories, let's consider the terrible ones.
Horrible secrets are a staple of horror stories. Secrets deal with the unknown, and the unknown is inherently terrifying for humans. What we don't know can kill us.
A horror story might revolve around a person, a family, or a whole town that is keeping a secret.
There are many reasons for keeping a secret. Maybe someone has threatened the person who holds the secret with harm if they ever divulge it. Maybe the person believes other people will be hurt if the secret comes out. Or the person keeping the secret might be the one who is hurting others. If the secret is a traumatic event, the person may have buried the memory unconsciously, because it is too painful to deal with. In supernatural horror stories, a secret might be disguised by illusion or magic.
Sometimes all the people who knew a secret might be long gone. In these cases, maybe the secret is hidden in a place or an object. A house, a grave, an old book, a photo, or a jewelry box all might hide a secret. In a story with a more modern twist, the secret might be hidden on a computer thumb drive or a cell phone.
If a secret is central to your story, be careful about how you reveal it. Depending on the story, reveal a little of the secret at a time to ratchet up the suspense. If it is a really gruesome secret, hinting at it might be more frightening than showing all the gory details.
Something to try: Write a horror story that centers on a secret. |
