Does the town where you live have an old house that all the kids believe is haunted? Every place I have ever lived has at least one. Take an old abandoned building, mix in a few local legends, add a generous portion of childhood imagination, and you have the recipe for a haunted house!
Old houses have a spooky quality that makes them a great setting for a horror story. Old buildings creak and groan even without the presence of ghosts. Branches scratching on the roof sound a lot like the claws of a monster trying to break in.
When houses are abandoned by humans, other species often move in. Old buildings are often home to mice, rats, raccoons, bats, and other creatures. Their scratching, squeaking, or growling might add to the illusion that the house is haunted. One of my friends was out hiking when he heard a horrible racket that he was convinced was a demon looking for victims. After listening to recordings of different animals on the internet he found out the "demon" was actually a wolverine! Ironically, rabies might make these animals more dangerous than any ghost. And don't forget the spiders! Their webs are an important part of any haunted house.
Most old houses no longer have electricity, or never had it in the first place. Any brave visitors are forced to navigate the halls with only the light of a flashlight, candle or lantern.
Of course, a house doesn't have to be old to be haunted. A new house might be haunted because a murder, suicide, or other suspicious death happened there. Or maybe the new house is built on the site of an older house or other site with ghost issues. Maybe the owners of the new house abandoned it or disappeared without leaving a reason, and it is up to your characters to find out why.
Out in the country near the town where I live, a row of small houses sits long abandoned. According to local legend, the owners built the first house, only to have ghosts move in with them. They built the second house and moved out, only to have the ghosts follow them. Then they built another, and another, and...I doubt that any of this story is true, but it is probably more interesting than what really happened!
Houses aren't the only places that can be haunted. Cemeteries are an expected hangout for ghosts. Actors are often superstitious, so many theatres are rumored to be haunted. Maybe your story could feature a haunted forest, park, or cornfield. Churches are thought to be a refuge from evil spirits, so a haunted church could be a fun twist.
Something to try: Write a horror story that features a haunted place. |
