Letter from the editor

Many writers agree that to write consistently, you need a solid place that you can concentrate and relax. But is that enough? Peaceful is great, and I like quiet, but not necessarily for writing. It's tough. I don't want silence but music can actually affect my writing - leak into it altering the plot. There was a paper published in the Journal of Consumer Research that showed while high levels of noise impair thinking, a consistent, low level of ambient noise can increase creativity. (You can read it here  Open in new Window. if you'd like.) I am a fan of ambient noise and have used it (or things like it) for several years. I have used it while writing but also while I'm at work when there is distracting noise or loud talk going on. I find it helps me focus much easier on whatever task I'm trying to complete. My favorite is one called Rainy Mood which is ironic since I really don't like storms. Do you utilize apps and websites to fill your mind with sound? Try it! You may find yourself inspired!

          Types of ambient noise:
*BlockP* Pink noise - similar to white noise only lower frequency.
*BlockR* Red (Brownian) noise - a deeper sound usually compared to waterfalls.
*BlockB* Blue noise - a higher level of white noise, usually compared to a hiss.
*BlockV* Violet noise - a high-pitched whistle that is usually experienced by people with tinnitus.
*BlockW* White noise - the most common is an equal blend of high and low frequencies.

Here is a handful of places to experience different types of ambient noise to get you started:

*CheckR* Noisli https://www.noisli.com/
Noisli is a good website for when you want to customize your background noise experience. You can click on 16 different icons on the website’s main page to turn them on or off. You can customize the volume of each sound and mix or match the different sounds you want to hear.

*CheckB* Hipstersound https://hipstersound.com/
Hipstersound is an ambient noise website featuring the comforting sounds and background chatter of several different cafes. There’s your basic “Busy Cafe,” a “Cafe de Paris” and a “Quiet Resto.” Listen to the murmur of customers in the background while dishes clink on either side of you.

*CheckO* Brain.fm https://www1.brain.fm/
A unique take on background ambient noise. The developers worked with auditory neuroscientists to create soundscapes that, according to their research, improve mental performance within 15 minutes or less.

*CheckG* Coffitivity https://coffitivity.com/
Another choice that offers ambient sounds of busy coffeehouses and restaurants.

*CheckY* Snowy Mood http://snowymood.demouth.net/
A free noise generator that plays sounds of boots walking through snow on an endless loop.

*CheckP* Snowy Escape http://snowyescape.com
The ambient noise here is created from the sounds of falling snow (and some wind) outside, and the crackling of a fireplace. You can adjust the volume of the fire and snow separately.

*CheckV* Rainy Mood http://www.rainymood.com
Rainy Mood is a website that plays steady rain sounds.

*CheckB* Jazz And Rain http://www.jazzandrain.com/
A background noise website that plays jazz with rain sounds. You can adjust the volume of the jazz and the volume of the rain separately.

*NoteBl* For those of you with a Mac, we can't leave you out.

*CheckR* Noizio http://noiz.io/
Noizio starts immersing you in a pleasant noise background as soon as your Mac starts up. Choose from 15 ambient sounds that you can mix and match–including Winter Wind, Deep Space, Sailing Yacht, Inside Train, and Blue Whales–to set the mood for any occasion, for work or relaxation.

*CheckP* OmmWriter https://ommwriter.com/
OmmWriter combines writing and background noise in one beautiful app. Open the app, and you're presented with a simple, distraction-free writing environment with a Zen-like soundtrack to accompany your writing. You can choose your writing background, soundtrack, and key sounds—or just go with OmmWriter's defaults to keep you focused on writing.
The careful selection of the audio and visual backgrounds is critical to the overall OmmWriter experience. The new visual backgrounds include a carefully selected set of images and photographs. In addition, we have worked closely together with a Color therapy expert to help us include … backgrounds [that] employ dynamically changing color techniques to subconsciously promote tranquility as well as to stimulate creativity.

Let me know which one is your new favorite!

Write and Review on! ~ Brooke

*Down*"This CD was my very first taste of Art of Noise. I was at a quiet summer party which featured this CD playing in the background with a red lightbulb in the corner of a huge sunk-in living room. I was all curled up with my notebook on the floor writing random lines of poetry that seemed to be inspired by the music while the others in attendance weren't paying it much mind. I found it to be incredibly beautiful." - Amazon Reviewer
