Case Colors

Why are we color coded?

Everyone who opens up an account here starts off with a grey case and is a Registered User.

Once the first item is added to a portfolio, the case turns black and the user becomes a Registered Author.

After a while of being on the site, bringing creativity, reviews, and a generally positive attitude to the site, some experience a promotion to sporting a yellow case and it says Preferred Author.

Those who send regular reviews, offer contests to the general membership, and show an overall higher involvement in the site get promoted to Moderator.

A very few, those who give inordinate amounts of time, or who create groups that benefit all members of the site through mentoring, coaching, even gift points for memberships, rise to become Senior Moderators.

Every time there is any sort of hierarchy, there is the potential for ill feelings. Those feelings are useless. Behind those case colors, we are all people with a real name, a life that happens outside of Writing.Com, and we are all equally human. Each one of us is an integral part of the site. Whether we joined yesterday or ten, or even 18 years ago. If we use this site to work on our writing, to discuss the merits of punctuation, and to mingle over the mysteries of the different types of English, then we are all one.

No matter what your case color, you are equal to anyone else here and you should treat them as such. Don't be scared to send a review to a member with a purple case. Don't treat the writing of a user with a black case with more strict rules than you would apply to a review for a blue case. See the story. Treat the person on the other side like the whole, real, unique, friendly person they are.

Back to the original question. Why are we color coded?

Each level of color changes your ability to use the site a little. When your case becomes black, you gain the ability to see more items on the site. When your case turns yellow, not much changes. It's a honor to show you that you have been seen. Those with a blue case take part in writing newsletters and help out with a couple of tasks around the site. The purple cases are in charge of "RAOK Upgrade Brigade GroupOpen in new Window. and some have helped writing "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window..

Every single one here started out with a grey case. And we really are one color: humanity.

Ask & Answer

I received one reply to my last Noticing Newbies newsletter "Benefits of a Paid MembershipOpen in new Window.

JayNaNoOhNo Author Icon wrote: 100% agreed! I have multiple backups for my writing - here at WdC, a second machine, local storage and external storage, plus 2 additional online backups.

Overkill? I don't think so. I could never remember all the words, or recapture the moments when I was writing. I think it would be ultimately depressing and defeating to lose everything.

Writing mostly poetry, I also have hard copies of my favourites (that's like the printed version, for all you kids out there LOL) in a binder. It might not be feasible for a book (it's not even feasible for all my poetry) but I like the tactile nature of turning the pages of my faves.

And as far as other benefits of upgrading - this is by far the best site I've found for community, and it is well worth the investment. If you're not sure, try the shorter time frame (I think it's three months). I have never regretted a second of membership, in fact I went from basic to premium within those three months!

You are correct. There is no such thing as overkill when it comes to protecting our precious words.
