Embracing the Community

A recent reconnect has helped me re-embrace my love for the community here. Perhaps my experience will inspire you.

So, just recently, I reached out to someone I'd not spoken to on this site for about nine years. (I suppose it's a good thing we've both been around a long time!) He didn't remember me much, so we had to go through the reconnect phase of getting to know one another again, which is fine. Eventually, we decided to collaborate on a project, which I'm very excited about. He says I'm doing all the work, but I'm pretty convinced he's doing the majority of it. Especially now.

But what struck me about this interaction was that the only way it happened is with both of us stepping outside of our comfort zones. I had to take a step outside of my comfort zone and reach out to someone I hadn't spoken to in a very long time. And goodness, I was fortunate that he was willing to speak back to me (which is also outside of his comfort zone). So, we both had to take a chance, and it has turned out well, so far. We both found something we needed. I found excellent reading material and the ability to give meaningful feedback to someone who I know wants/needs/will use it in real time. He found someone willing to give the feedback he needs in the format he needs it. A true win-win situation.

My suggestion to you... is to find someone you can do this with. Someone you can tell exactly what you need, and they'll be willing to provide it. Someone who will help you learn and grow as a writer. Someone who will read your material, and tell you where your holes are, or what needs to be improved. Someone you can ask specific questions, and they will give you specific feedback. That is where your strength in this website can lie.

There are people here connected from all over the world. Somewhere in the thousands of people using this site is a person (or group of people) who will help you grow as a writer. Find him/her/them! Embrace the community of writers you have surrounding you, and find the ones who are going to help you grow stronger.
