Letter from the editor

What is spiritual poetry? This is a question I often ask, and search the the internet for an answer. I have found no specific or satisfying definition for this poetic genre. Therefore, I have come to the conclusion that each poet must find his or her own definition for this genre. Is spiritual poetry and mystic poetry two different names for the same poetic genre? My answer to this question is yes. However, I am sure there are poets and readers of poetry, who would say no. Therefore, I suggest each individual read translations of the poetry by Tahirih, Rumi, Omar Khayyam, Kahlil Gibran, etc. to determine for yourself mystic and spiritual poetry are the same genre.

After much soul searching, poetry reading, scripture reading, and meditation I finally wrote a satisfying--but personal--definition for "Spiritual PoetryOpen in new Window.. Below is the final edit of the poem>

The heart of spiritual poetry
engages both religious tradition
and the Mystery.

It unifies diverse cultural backgrounds
and sacred practices,
while revealing a fundamental reality
that is larger than the ego-self
and more inclusive
that personal concepts of divinity.

It encourages
intimate encounters with the sacred,
with the soul-self
that hides behind the veils of opposites.

In composing spiritual poetry
the poet's soul gives expression
to its experience of awe
through odes to the Beloved.

I encourage anyone who has never written a spiritual poem to attempt it. The spiritual poems I write helps me to understand my beliefs and why I believe.

Zeke Author Icon writes: This is obviously a very common rule throughout the world. Unfortunately many ignore it.

dragonblue2 writes: In my spiritual path the golden rule is: "An ye harm none, do as thou wilt!"

BIG BAD WOLF is Howling Author Icon writes: As is said by a certain disguised evil adviser to a certain street rat in a certain animated film featuring a late great comedian called "Bob Will", "He who has the gold makes the rules."

LMs❤️BrewinMagic Author Icon writes: Hello Neva,
Great newsletter, you knocked it out of the ballpark. It is so true, if you live by the Golden Rule others will see and just maybe, they will also. Thank you for including my article, I appreciate it very much.

Mia - craving colour Author Icon writes: HI Neva,

I'm responding to your question as to whether or not we have a Golden Rule to live by.
Though "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window. doesn't address the Golden Rule directly, I believe it is related.
