Letter from the editor

“For your born writer, nothing is so healing as the realization that he has come upon the right word.”
—Catherine Drinker Bowen

At one time or another, every writer is inspired by a writing prompt. What inspires you may be completely different than the author next to you. The most popular prompts are often the most generic (in my opinion) which makes no sense to me, but that's because I prefer detailed more specific prompts. I find them more challenging. Many authors probably see more opportunity in the generic prompts than I do. Others may see details as restrictions where I see them as opportunities to twist the story.

Aside from a contest, where do you find prompts?

My first choice would be our own Writing Prompt  Open in new Window. generator. It's simple - just look for Writing.com Tools on the left-hand menu and in the pop-out list click "*Thought* Writing Prompts" and you'll always have a random prompt to inspire you. The current prompt that popped up at this writing was:

A photographer travels to New Mexico just to capture wild horses prancing in the snow, but he ends up capturing much more.

Does that inspire you? Make sure when you read prompts, that you look beyond the obvious. Do you see a science fiction story about aliens? Perhaps a feel-good Christmas tale about redemption in the desert for a past failure? How about a romantic western tale about meeting your soulmate? There are many ways to take the prompt above. What if the horse isn't really a horse after all, but a mythological creature? Not a bad prompt with many different angles to explore, right?

How many of you prefer specific prompts like this one? Take the poll and tell me!

[Linked Poll's access is restricted.]

Ask & Answer

I received some feedback to my last newsletter [#9177] "The Answer Is ...Open in new Window. and I'm proud to share it with you.

From Jim Hall Author Icon
I didn't see the last newsletter, but my answer would be to try as many different genres as possible. You never know what you will discover. I once wrote a Steampunk story for the first time (a novel), and it won two Quill Awards!

I also recommend that new writers take advantage of the different courses available here at WdC like, "The Art of Show vs Tell CoursesOpen in new Window. or the "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window.. These courses can't help but make you a better writer if you are willing to put forth the effort.

These are my suggestions for "What's next?"

Jim
