Letter from the editor

Thirteen. That's how many official Writing.Com (WDC) Newsletters currently exist. Once upon a time there were 14. More on that later.

The 13 subjects are Action/Adventure, Comedy, Contest & Activities, Drama, Fantasy, For Authors, Horror/Scary, Mystery, Noticing Newbies, Poetry, Romance/Love, Short Stories and Spiritual.

You can probably tell what sort of subjects would be discussed in many of the newsletter categories by the name. Some categories are pretty specific--Comedy, Fantasy, and Contests & Activities, for example. Others are by nature general--Short Stories, For Authors, and of course, Noticing Newbies. I, for one, will touch on a wide range of topics in my newsletters.

A short explanation. Some older members (yes, I see you lurking here) may remember there have been member-sponsored newsletters published in the past--a Reviewing newsletter, one focusing on Erotica, and one dealing with Grammar. Having written for each of these in the past, I wish they were still active. But the scope of this newsletter is on the official WDC newsletters.

Only Moderators and Senior Moderators write newsletters. That means only 91 folks out of the more than 750,000 active members are able to write and publish a newsletter. In truth that number is even fewer than 91 as not every Mod participates as an active editor.

Each editor comes up with his or her own subject about which to write--researching that topic, massaging it into a coherent form, finding member's stories to help illustrate that topic, answering any feedback received, and putting it all together in the newsletter's template within the prescribed deadline.

Each newsletter is published weekly on Wednesdays. Over the course of a year, more than 670 newsletters may be posted. That's a LOT of potential information designed to impact and enhance your writing endeavors. Each newsletter is carefully written to give WDC members some insight into an aspect of the craft we embrace called writing.

Take a moment to look at the Newsletter tab under the Writing Resources link in the Navigation menu on the left side of your page. Clicking on this tab opens the Writing.Com Newsletter Area, which contains four sections.

         1. Within this area one can find an archive of past newsletters, including the current week's issues. The archives are listed by specific newsletter subject. These archives contain newsletters going back to 2005, with many containing information still relevant today. To go back even further, click on the link at the bottom of the page, or "Writing.Com Newsletter ArchivesOpen in new Window.. WDC Newsletters were started on Jun 5, 2001 in hopes of engaging both members and readers in the community on a weekly basis. Now that's history! In fact, check out these older archives and you'll find an official newsletter that is no longer published.

         2. Here you can submit one of your written items for consideration in a specific newsletter. While it's not a guarantee your submission will be used ... it certainly can't be used if it's not submitted.

         3. Here you can provided feedback regarding a specific newsletter in the form of suggestions, corrections or just thoughts in general.

         4. Finally, you can manage your newsletter subscriptions by checking the box for those newsletters you'd like to receive each week. These can be changed at any time, or as often as you'd like.

And now a challenge:

The first Newbie (a member with an inception date of six months or less from the date of this newsletter) to correctly tell me the subject of the defunct newsletter from the archives, and answering in the Feedback section to this Noticing Newbies newsletter will receive a Senior Moderator Merit Badge.

Newsletters are a tremendous source of information from which you can easily tap, and adapt to your own writing needs. Over the past 18 years, countless Moderators have passed on their wisdom and experiences on the craft of writing in these newsletters. Surely you can find some nugget to help you on your writing journey.

Write (and Read) On!

Ask & Answer

Thanks for spending time with me today. If you liked what you read (or if you didn't), please take time and drop me a line. I'd love to hear your ideas.

And now, from the mailbag:

From ♫~ Kenword~♫ Author Icon: Hello Friend, Thank you for the encouragement to submit to the Dear Me contest. In nine years of being a WDC member I have come close twice to entering this contest. After reading your encouragement I wondered what it would be like today to review those eight previous entries. An astounding amount of history has occurred in nearly a decade of "the writing life." Well I am submitting this year! Thanks for the "boost"! *Mugr*

One thing I've learned from growing older, it's NEVER too late to start a tradition. And if you're still here after the next eight years of entering this contest, I'm certain you'll enjoy "re-living your history."

From Jeff Author Icon: Technically, Rhythms & Writing only occurs once a year as well... every July. *Wink*

And I'm still learning things here. *Laugh*
